I won't have my winch in time for this run. My co-worker has one and so does some others going with us. A winch is almost a must when snow wheeling. I will have recovery strap, shackles and a shovel. Just be prepared for bad weather and the unexpected. Airing down will be advisable, so having a way to air up may help. I have a powertank and my friend will be bringing his air compressor. Hopefully others will have some as well.

HWY 50 past Placerville. Google Mormon emigrant trail. Easier if you see it, rather than me explain. We will be meeting up in locally and be meeting Jim further up the hwy. If interested I can pm you my number or just meet at mcdonalds on hazel ave off hwy 50.

We'll all have to come back down. This time of year, there's no choice.

You're thinking of Silver Fork Road. It goes from Kyburz up to MET (and this is where we went the second run last year), but this time of year the gate on Silver Fork Rd is also closed/locked for the winter.

FYI, they're calling for snow down to 2K feet Sunday morning, but accumulations down that low may be slim. But you may have chain controls just above Placerville. If that's the case, you'll get some warm up time before getting to MET.:D

I know I read a few weeks ago that chains are technically required by CA state law. I've never bought a set for the new tires, since they are considered traction tires (and larger than I had a set of chains for) I can still bypass a chain up station right? It was my understanding that I could, but I was required to have chains regardless.

    Who would know... right?

It's 26 miles from Hwy 50 to Hwy 88. In the summer, it takes me 45 minutes to Carson Pass which is about 7 minutes past Kirkwood. This time of year, you can cut over to Hwy 88 from Hwy 50 via Omo Ranch Rd if snow isn't too deep (comes in at 5K ft level on Hwy 88 and is not gated at all during the year). I've gone that way in the winter when the snow isn't too deep. And yes, your MTs will help (especially if you're inexperienced).

I also want to say, don't worry about damage to your trucks. This type of stuff shouldn't do any damage. Just be prepared when we're done and get up to speed that your truck is going to shake like it's falling apart from all the ice/snow that builds up on your wheels.

You're required to have chains. However, since chains are almost never required on 4wd vehicles they just wave you through. They'll likely have you slow down to a stop and they'll check your tires (tread depth and tread pattern at a glance when you're slowing), and sometimes they ask if you have 4wd and have it in 4wd. I've had them do all of the above at various times. But I've never had them check for chains even when chains requirements were in Placerville and the snow before home on the freeway was over a foot deep!

Wheeling in snow is more about finesse and feel than anything. You want to float not dig. You won't be breaking anything but shit does happen. You will have a very clean underbelly and tires tho.

That's where it pays to listen and learn. If you get stuck after 50 feet because you're flooring it in 4Lo and are listening to your rev limiter, well you might get razzed a little. (I wonder if Steven's ears are burning right now:p)

    And it's a blast!

Me too. In fact, new rule. The trucks with less clearance toward the front, not the back of the pack!

Wait what? We always did most to least so the stuff between the wheels is mowed down for the lower clearance rigs.
