HK vs kimber. what to carry....help needed

i posted a few days ago about what kind of gun to get for my carry gun. I have narrowed it down to a couple..... I am either going to go with the HK p2000sk or possibly a kimber ultra carry 2. If i get the p2000sk it will more than likely be a 9mm sa/da. if i get the ultra carry it will obviously be a .45.

that being said im just looking for some info on the two manufacturers. I hear some say that HK is indestructible and some that beg to differ. And i dont know much at all about the kimber reliability.

Dude I have been shopping for a gun like crazy. I went into the store today and held a Kimber Pro Carry II 1911 .45 4" and it was the perfect gun for me. it felt great.

I am now looking for a 1911 style .40 s&w 4" barrel. I am not sure who makes this gun. might have to do it myself.hehe that would be fun...

after research and talking to friends and considering a million other stupid idiosyncrasies thats what i decided would be my ideal gun to carry.

either of those brands you will be happy with. its the one that feels right is the one i would buy if i was you.

 

Kimber is awesome man. I shot a Custom Covert II and jizzed myself.

 

Get a Kimber. The single action pull of a 1911 can be amazing. The HK's pull is no good.

.45 is a classic fighting round that as been around for 100 years. 230 grainers.

Big and slow, like a freight train.

If it can't be done in 8+1, it can't be done.

doesnt matter your going to love the kimber so much its gonna make the choice easy.

 

How will you be carrying this new gem of yours? I believe the width is identical on both guns but would lean towards the skinnier one.

That said, the 1911 platform in my opinion is unbeatable, how can a design still be around unchanged for almost a 100 years?

Also, my advice is to consider a 4" barrel for the Kimber or any other Commander sized 1911, the extra 1" will end up being hidden beneath your waist line and will not add to the "print" of the weapon (if IWB). I carry a full size gov't model (5" barrel) without any trouble. If you have some friends who also carry, get them to loan you a holster or two. It will make a big difference for when you make your decision. If you drive a lot, make sure the sitting position is comfortable too.

If you've ever shot a 3" .45, you'll notice that your wrist will not take so kindly to that recoil. This will most likely be a pain for you at the range and certainly you'll want to log range time with a carry piece, won't make much sense to practice with a different gun than the one you carry.

These are weapons and these are my opinions. Take them for what's it's worth. Either way, be sure to choose something that's fit for your needs and do your home work, most gun shops that have a range will have rental guns, try them out and see for yourself.

I'm partial to the USP, but you can't ever go wrong with a 1911.

 

HKHKHKHK!!! Take my advice and go with their tactical. I have their .40cal tactical and have literally put it through everything. The thing will even shoot under water, which a lot of guns will do, but this one will even cycle another round under water. It is nice having an adjustable trigger pull also. Just be ready to shell out about a grand. You probably know that already if you are looking at a Kimber though.

1911s that are not of the original JMB design of 5" barrel, steel frame, and GI guide rod TEND to be less than reliable.

The HK USP Tactical is way to big for that.

 

Go with a Kiimber, but make sure its got an internal extractor not an external extractor.

 

By carry, do you mean concealed or duty? Those 1911s are pretty difficult to conceal unless you are a burly guy. Anyway, if looking for a "duty carry pistol", email the manufacturers directly requesting a price list, they always have unbeatable pricing. Some ship direct, and others sell through a network of dealers.

To me, either of the guns u list will do, it's just a matter of what features u want. Single action vs. double action, caliber, cost if ammo............

To the person inquiring about a 4" 1911, look at the Springfield Champion Loaded model. It's a nice little piece. Pricey, but nice. Also, if you're a LEO u can get a price list from manufacturer.

I'm not sure whether Kimber makes a 40 or not.....haven't researched it, but you might check. I know they make 1911s in 10mm which is nothing more than a long 40, or, actually, the 40 S&W is nothing more than a shortened 10mm, the egg preceded the chicken.

I have looked at a 1911 made by Springfield Armory in a compact version made in both 9mm and 40 S&W. I want the 9 bad, but they ain't cheap, MSRP in the $1200 neighborhood.....meaning that you can find them for around a grand.

Not sure I'd try to 'make' one from an existing gun, like a 45. I think that there'd be all sorts of problems with that. Might be a fun project to play with if you've got some gunsmithing skilz, but potentially dangerous also as the 40 is a high pressure round.

Edit: Just looked at the Springfield Armory website. The 1911s I'm talking about are the EMP models, they are 3" and sweet little guns, chambered in 9x19, 40S&W and 45GAP.

 

HK for carry....Kimber for sport.
I have 2 Kimbers, ProCarry and TLE II both are nice and I use them for IPSC, but neither gets carried.
Prefer lighter, smaller.
BTW, don't buy a 1911 with an alloy frame...too many issues with feed ramps.
Steel is real.
Why not an XD .40?

 

Hey neighbor, my alloy framed Springfield has a steel feed ramp to address the issue you speak of (it's part of the barrel) and has been flawless for 3 years so far. I would agree if it didn't have a steel feed ramp that there would be problems but mine is quite rock solid.

I'm amused that you wrote steel is real and then recommended an XD 40

OK... I threw a bunch of crap out there without totally thinking.
The feed ramp is part of the barrel, however where rounds clear the mag lips on the 1911, there is a bit of the frame, under the feed ramp that can get galled using HP ammo, and is treated on the Kimber but can be degraded by some mag followers and hollowpoints. A dork like me with a dremel can also polish through it pretty easily, allowing the exposed alloy underneath to take a beating.
I prefer steel framed 1911's.
Polymer frame designs like Glock and SA XD, are a different league and I didn't intend my steel comment to apply there.
Point being...carry is different than tactical or sport guns.

Nah, it's all good, I knew exactly what you meant, I was just poking fun. You are right about the alloy framed 1911's having that issue and for added security and piece of mind, I carry FMJ's in my alloy frame just in case... and all my other 1911's are steel because I, like you, believe that nothing beats a nicely weighted steel pistol. Perhaps I'll see you around a match or two... Take care.

I carry a Kimber Pro Carry with many rounds through it with no problem to the alloy frame. I use Wilson #47d 8 round mags with plastic followers.
If you want to carry a 1911, you gotta keep it clean and well oiled. The HK I would not hesitate to do a 50 to 150 round range outing and just wipe it off and put it back into my holster. I would not advise that with a 1911 they need to be cleaned and oiled well to be a carry gun to for me.
I don't think you can go wrong with ether of them, just one needs more maintenance than the other.

 

ok, so i have narrowed my choice to the HK over the Kimber (primarily due to pricing) however now there is another in the mix..... how does the hk p2000sk compare to the SIG p239? there isnt anywhere near me that rents those two guns so shooting them isnt really an option right now.
