    It IS in fact, a negative pressure area. I have checked this numerous times, and had friends do the same. The most simple way to tell, is to spray water on the hood, and see how fast you have to go before it blows off. I could get to 40 mph, and the water drops would just sit there and quivver. In this pic, you can see how air flows over a truck:

    In this pic of a Dodge RAM, arguably one of the more areodynamic pick ups, you can see that high pressure is dictated by the darker colors, while low pressure is described by the lighter colors. You can once again see the hood area, all of it, resides in a low pressure area.

    In this pic useing Smoke as the visual aid, you can see the smoke doesnt come into contact of the hood at all. Only hitting the truck at the windshield, and roof line.

    Sure. Putting it in the stream of high pressure air would allow the scoop to be functional, at the cost of decreased forward visability.

    If you mod a nose like this onto your truck, and made a functional hood scoop... that might work ... it should reduce the negative area on the hood and direct air into the scoop.

    The hood scoop is less than 2" tall. Now....by your logic, being as the scoop is closed off, dont you think it would creat drag in its location, if it was in the airstream? Now....Comparing the hood on a Pick up, to the wing of an aircraft, is silly. DOnt you think?

    It's a Japanese truck, nobody has to justify anything. It's got a Toyota emblem on the front and metric bolts holding the tailgate together. If the door sticker says USA, Mexico, Canada, or Uganda, it's a Japanese truck.

    Comparing a non-scooped hood in a wind tunnel test to a scooped hood in a theoretical test is silly. And yes! I think it would create drag. I think that has something to do with it. I think water sits on the hood because of what's happening in front of it. Are you agreeing that a closed scoop creates drag? Because open or closed, if it's in a low pressure area that works like you say, then either way it shouldn't be effected.

    It's funny, I 100% took your word for it when I ripped the entire front of my truck apart to do my 5100's. Never did anything beyond plugs and oil changes before that. Didn't even think twice. Printed out the write up and knocked it out.

    But you're lying to me now. I know it. :p

    Im not sure how else to help understand it, than whats already been posted. To help wrap your head around it, spray some water on your hood, and drive in a straight line. See how fast you have to go to get it to blow off. Also, Look at the design of vehicles that have actual functioning hood scoops. The WRX for example, has a lanted nose (more so than the Tacoma), and the scoop sits up quite a bit. Not only that, the a scoop in the center of the hood, even "if" in the air stream, is a horrible location for one. The Crysler "Air Induction" of the later 60's and on, was a good idea. The scoop faced backwards, and was at the base of the windshield. This is because the air over the hood, was found to "swirl" in a clockwise direction, and the base of the windshield was were the air (high pressure) came back into contact with the vehicle. My Honda has a factory air intake scoop on it. Its mounted at the top of the radiator, and gets its air right from the grill at the fron of the car. Just as in the pics I posted, that is a nice high pressure area.
