    Public transportation is a good idea in densely populated small areas, like New York, or LA, or France.

    It doesn't quite work in the rest of the US.

    Define "handle". If you mean "there's a bus somewhere in the city", then yes, it can handle it.

    If you mean "the majority of the population can live without a personal motor vehicle and not be at a disadvantage for employment, recreation, etc.", then not so much.
