bad gas mileage

Hello to everyone!
I just sold my Frontier Crew Cab v6 and get a 2003 Tacoma 2.4l , regular cab to make better gas mileage. After the second tank with the small Tacoma I am not happy with the results. 190-200 ml in the city(15mpg), and 18-19 on the freeway. There is nothing wrong whith it, works good looks good. I got almost same as Frontier, exept the week engine, small cab, and ... I do not no if this is normal but, is there something that I can do to improve the mpg??

 

You do realize that the highest EPA MPG estimate on a 2003 Tacoma 2.4l mileage is est. 17/20 mpg? Did you not research this before you bought the truck?

 

could be worse..i get 10mpg with my V6 and 33'' tires..

 

When I had my 97 2.7, with 32x11.50's, I got about 22-23 MPGs.

Have you tuned it up?

Fuel filter, plugs, wires, PCV, air filter, tire pressure, TB cleaning, etc?

 

Actually it's 20/25 mpg. So he isn't even in the ballpark. Definitely needs a tuneup.

My 96 2.4l got a consistent 25-26 mpg.

I did, fueleconomy Tacoma 2003 2.4l, 2wd, automatic trans. 19/23/21 mpg.
What mpg you get with the same engine? The car has 80K on it. I push it to match may be.

 

nah, pretty normal actually for 33x12.5s. all city driving tho too.

I ride on 33x12.5 on a 4 inch lift all. Ity driving and I get around 15mpg. You should look into something going on.

 

Im not too worried. Know several members in the same boat. Could be tons of things. I have already done lots of the tuning stuff. Fuel filter is next, thats it tho.

20/25 is for 2WD, manual 5-speed, 2.4L


17/20 is for 4WD, auto, 2.4L

 

My 2.7 w/ 33's and stock gears (4.10s) gets 17-18 in the city I get around 22 on the highway. But that is driving SUPER conservatively. IE..shifting at 2k or under, using 5th gear in 40mph+, down shifting everywhere to cut off the injectors, and keeping highway speeds to no faster than 65 mph.

You just dont know how to drive




To the OP: Just tune up the truck; plugs, wires, airfilter, clean MAF, fuel filter, and maybe clean the throttle body....then you will be back up to normal mileage

Hey! I tried a whole tank under 2k just like you said..nothing..

so..ive gone back to me street driver ways haha

have you tried cleaning the throttle body and such? Doing everything that I have listed in my previous post got me from 14mpg to 17-18mpg.

 

everything but the TB and Fuel filter.

getting the Filter done here this week tho i think.

was getting 17-18 city and 19-22 hwy with my 31s lol

 

hmmm...clean your TB for sure. I promise it will help

And check your exhaust mani's for cracks.

An exhaust leak that close to your motor can kill mileage and power.

 

I have heard ( and this could be BS) that Toyota fuel filter are desinged to never need replacment. My Cousin has a 2000 Tundra and had the dealer do a bunch of repairs one of them was wanting the FF replaced. The Toy Tech said there is no need but my Cuz insisted on replacemnet 3 weeks later he needed new injectors. Any body hear of this ?

 

I have heard of that, but idk...its a cheap filter...worth it to replace it.

And the injectors going bad afterwards...totally unrelated..how could replacing a filter that will allow a cleaner supply of fuel be fed hurt anything?

 

Bad O2 sensor got me about 9 mpg Yay hah just replaced took a long time for the engine light to come on mpg went from about 20 to 13 to 9

 

Look at the front O2 sensor. When mine went bad it caused poor mileage and a check engine light with a PO420 error. Noting actually pointed at the front O2 sensor.

When this was bad I was getting 10-11 MPG in mixed driving. After replacement the mileage was back to 18-19.
