Aggressive wheel / tire combo - no lift

I'm currently running some Toyo 265/70/R16s on stock 04 wheels that came with the truck (04, trd/sr5, dcab) when I bought it (jan-09).

I'm due for a new set of wheels and I'd rather upgrade than simply replace. Done right, I'd throw a pair of Bilstien 5100's, some 33's, regear my tranny, and lift the rear end. However, that's an expensive as fuck proposition and I'd rather wait to do that until my truck is paid off.

So I'm looking for advice / recommendations on what I could rock in the mean time:

1) Largest tires (I've read here) I can run w/out rubbing is 265/70/r16s or maybe 265/75/r16's if the god's love me.

2) Wheels. I'd like to run a pair of plain black steelies. OR, I could just paint my stock wheels. I'm looking for thoughts on giving the truck a slightly wider stance - so tires are equal to (at least) plastic fender flares (04 trd/sr5)

3) Spacers? Yes no? Front only or front and back? Not a fan of wide front stance with narrow back stance.

Thoughts / ideas? I know this has probably been beaten to death.

 

I ran 265/75R16 on 4.25 BS Ultra wheels on stock height for a while and it only rubbed but right at the bottom of the inner plastic above the mudflap.

 

265/75/16 Good Year Duratracs is one of the most aggressive tires you can run with zero lift. Even then you will have slight rubbing with the steering wheel at full lock.

 

so going from stock 265/70/r16 to 265/75/r16 I calculate you will gain 1.1 inches in clearance ( or would it be half of that?), although I am guessing each tire runs a little higher or lower, air pressure, etc... I am thinking about doing the same , once the stock tires are in need of replacing I might as well gain an inch (no comments, yes on my tires!) who else is running 75s on 16 wheels and can weigh in on any rubbing issues in front?

Here is the math I used 265s are 10.4 inches wide, 75s = x .75 of 10.4 + 16 rim

I'm looking for good ideas on a wider tire / offset wheel / spacer combo without breaking the bank - otherwise I might as well buy some cheap tires, wait till car is paid off, and go hog wild then.

 

I am running 265/75/16 cooper discoverer ATR tires on my stock doublecab with worn out suspension. It rubs slightly on the frame at full lock, but it isn't bad at all.

 

The one piece of info that doesn't come through clearly if you search a bunch of threads is this:

At stock height you can run 265/75R16 tires (1" oversize) on stock rims OR

You can run an aftermarket rim 16x8" 4.5" backspacing, 0mm offset with 265/70R16 tires. This rim has more "negative offset" than stock, for a slightly wider stance.

But you have to pick one or the other. But if you try to run the oversize tire on the wider stance rim, you'll run into trouble at stock ride height.

 

You can fit 285 but you gotta trim

 

BTW since I didn't mention this was my previous setup on my 03' with no lift. I've since changed tires but yeah it rubs at full lock.

 

So my choices are (without rubbing / modding):

1) Stock rims + 265/75/r16s (Taller by 1")

OR

2) 16 x 8 (Like Wheeler's black stelies - type A) + 265/70/r16s (wider stance)

Is that basically the story?

Since 285 is the tread width I'd think the second number would be the deciding factor in what has to be trimmed

 

mine is a similar set up, except I have a 1.5 coil lift in the front...

 

sorry this is prop off topic but what's the name of the Federal tires people use?

 

So would a wheel with more backspacing be a total fix to rubbing with a 265/75/16

 

i have some decent info, for whoever said you could do the 285's with lots of trimming. stock supsension WILL NOT hold it. im buying a set of eagle alloy 187's from a buddy of mine, he had them on a silverado, with 285/75/16 yokohama geolanders. and they rubbed his stock suspension with torsion bars raised all the way. but the moral of what im getting to, is that i put one side of tires onto my truck to see what the rims would look like, and they will definitely no work. now 285's on stock rims.. maybe. but these rims are 8" wide, with 4" bs and if both fronts were installed, the turning radius would be about 1" either way. because they hit the factory flares/cab of truck. my other question is, with only a 4" bs im gaining a little more than factory, but when i put a 3" toytec/eibach, and bilstein lift. will the bs be ok? and until then i have a 2" spacer leveling kit. will my stock size (265/70/16) wranglers fit with no rubbing? on these new rims.

my experience exactly! with my 125k mile stock suspension there was only the slightest frame rub at full lock. not the most aggresive looking tire though, but they perform very well
