Going into IT courses spring semester of next year. Trying to look ahead. Wondering if I should invest a Windows laptop. I already have a Fall 2011 13" MBP. I know I want to bump the RAM in it up to 8GB from 4 already. Thinking about doing that and just running parallels, bootcamp, or something of that nature if I need to.

Hoping some of you guys that went to school for IT might know something about this.

MACs have no place in the IT world... you will have to run Parallels or whatever emulation software suits you. My boss has a mac book pro but he is always in his windows emulation.

I would assume 8GB of RAM would be plenty to do so, yah?

That's what I would do. No sense buying another computer if yours will run an image just fine.

I don't have a MBP myself, but I think I've heard rumor that you can't run a virtual machine within Windows because it's basically a virtual inside a virtual.

Also, networking can be a different experience. Each company has a different idea of what the 'standard' way of doing things happens to be 'standard'.

Can't you install full blown Windoze on a MBP now that they run x86 procs?

Either way, VM's will get you most of the way. There's some things that might not fly, but I would think for the most part you'd be fine. It really depends on what kind of classes you're going to take... "IT" classes could mean any number of things.

I think I can use bootcamp instead of parallels and not run into any issues :notsure:

Good lord. I don't understand why companies want to pigeon-hole employees. I still have to pay for the blasted device, it's my phone in my name - why the hell can't I choose?

Replaced an old Dimension 2400 with an Optiplex 330 for an end user. Optiplex had 1GB of RAM and a dual-core, more than enough computing power for what she was doing. I get a service call an hour later saying it stopped working and wont boot...
...After much questioning, come to find out she knocked it over, killing the hard drive. I replaced the hard drive re-imaged, gave it back to her and was really close to ratchet strapping it to her desk, her manager wouldn't go for it though.

How so? I run it at home and it suits me better than VMW and Xen. Primarily for the HDD passthrough feature for one of my VM's. But that's far from a production environment, and I know that VMW has been in the business for eons, so they're no fools. Just curious.

if you are running it at home, no big deal. When you try to setup hyper-V in a large cluster like vmware its a total PIECE 'O SHIT. It is still about 5 years behind the other two for capability and ease of setup.

Since I've developed and installed 3 web farms of Hyper-v so far in my life. 2 of them were taken down to use VMware due to issues. The 3rd one is very small *4 servers max* and it runs 'ok' for the most part.

    1. It's developed my Microsoft.
    2. It's total garbage
    3. It's a 'free' solution to VM ware, ends up costing the same if not more after everything is said and done.
    4. Performance of vmware is FAR SUPERIOR than Hyper-v.
    5. Setting up a webfarm in VMware is super easy. In Hyper-v its a pain in the ass.

For some reason the old boss that I do all his IT for still wants all Hyper-v to 'save money'. After everything was said and done, he ended up spending more money in setup time and troubleshooting then he would have just paying for VM ware, which BOTH of us are very familiar with. He just wanted the 'latest and greatest' solution from Microsoft and he's been kicking himself in the ass ever since. We have plans now in July-Aug to tear down the network again and go VM ware.

Hyper-v is good for 1-3 servers max in a farm. After that it just ends up being a giant mess. And can't tell you how many 'odd' issues have come up that Microsoft 'can't explain' when we spoke to them. Also the amount of times where we'd try to reload the server from a backup and it'd fail, not work with AD/DNS or some other bullshit reason.

    VMWare FTW
