another tire/wheel thread

I know another tire/wheel thread, but I haven't seen anyone ask, you'll have to forgive it is a stupid question.

I basically want to gain as much lift from tires/wheels as I can without rubbing/lifting, etc...

Is it better to go with a 265/75/R16 tire on the stock 16" rim or to stick with stock tires 265/70 with a 17" rim? The should both give me about 1" lift from stock.

Seems like the larger rim would allow for tighter turns on road since the tire isn't as tall, ,etc.. I don't do much off roading, but like to hit some fishing holes off road from time to time.

MPG, rubbing, ride quality, suspension stress, etc....

OP, k9cop laughed because it is quite clear that you don't have the slightest understanding of tire sizing. Also, you made the cardinal mistake of posting this in the completely wrong section. You really need to start with some basic research on the subject, and here's where you should start:

BTW, 265/70/17 is not a stock size for our trucks.

 

I never thought about that. So would a 17" rim be better for offroading then, being that it has a shorter side wall and less area to damage/puncture?

 

265/75/16 and 265/70/17 are same diameter tires. Generally they are the largest tire size that fits on stock suspension on a 2nd gen.

These will give you 0.5", not 1" of lift from tires alone.

Stock tire sizes are 265/70/16 and 265/65/17 for TRD trucks and 245/75/16 for SR5 and base 6 lug trucks.

 

Not sure where OP is unclear about sizing, other than those sizes will only give him a 1/2" lift. The diameter is a 1" increase but you only get half of that as lift.

I don't think you will see any meaningful difference between the two sizes other than looks.

I completely understand tire sizing, but lets assume for a minute that I don't? WHO FUCKING CARES? that is what this forum is for, to get opinions and lessons learned from others!!! Thanks for the calc that I have used previously and I actually use the math behind to not need the calc, so what is your point if the calc can't answer my question?

Thanks, yes I know, but I am asking for an opinion on what others have done with the same 1" difference would you rather have a larger wheel or a smaller wheel with a larger tire and any pros and cons.

If you were to read any other of my numerous posts in the wheel/tire section, you would see that I genuinely try and help people out. As someone who legitimately knows this subject very well, telling you to do some basic research is the best way to help you.

It is very obvious that you don't really understand as well as you think you do when you make statements like: "both give me about 1" lift from stock", and "Seems like the larger rim would allow for tighter turns on road since the tire isn't as tall".

 

understand, but I am not looking for technical research data, perhaps 1" lift was incorrectly stated, 1" larger tire would have put it better, but that doesn't answer my questions. you can corner better on lower profile tires yes, ok then that is what I was asking, would YOU rather run a lower profile tire with a larger wheel or a larger tire with a smaller wheel and if so why? better offroading with a a larger wheel or tire, better ride, etc.. etc.. etc.. Does that make it clearer?

He said when you increase the diameter of the tire by 1" only half of that is "lift" because its all the way around, so basically you're a 1/2" bigger up top too. Other dude said he needs to more research. I'm curious why myself.

 

This is probably the only, and definitely the most useful thing thats going to come out of this thread.

 

I propose that whenever a new member signs up on TW they immediately be directed to a page that has the following

-What height to set my billies at to achieve the most lift
-What is the largest tire size I can go without rubbing
-What lift is better, spacer, suspension, or body
-Etc.

That way they can learn and hopefully it will cut down on the 345,432 threads about the same topic.
