and as for killing the sea turtle, that still makes me mad. but lets face it, there are stupid people everywhere, and the more rules and laws we make up to "protect" us, is only taking away our rights.

hell my grandfather for years going out there never needed 4x4, with old bias ply tire, you just let the air out, I asked him once what do you do when you get back to the road, he said thats why we take your grandma, thats when the old windbag comes in handy. back in the late 50s all he had was a ford station wagen, and him and his buddies would load it down with crackers, coolers, and beer and go. and dont forget the cigs.
he always said some of the old cars were more evenly balanced with there weight, and with a wider base he thought that was why people did not have too much trouble back then.
and one day I will share the story of my dad getting stuck deep at Ocracoke inlet in his 92 toyota 4x4.. and who got to walk to the coast guard station....

You're welcome, but I was joking...you don't want to hear any other opinions but your own on this issue.

EDIT: No offense. I certainly respect your passion - I too am passionate about many causes.

ok, one thing my father and I did not see eye to eye on was 4wheel drive.
I used to get into my grandfathers collection of P.M. and did some reading on basic drive maintenance. one thing they pointed out then was to engage it once and month, for at least 2 miles. He did not believe in that, period, and that's his choice, but he would never engage in ahead of time also so around 1975 and labor day weekend we were down for the week before school started, and he had his International Scout 2, Green with white top, and we were going out on the beach, by the hatteras ferry termanal, cant remember the number, and in those days there were still dunes, and you had to use the wooden ramps to get to the beach, and mom was bitching to put the damn thing in 4wd and he keeped saying I'm not to use it if I dont need it, well as soon as we hit the sand, we sank down to the doors, the softest sand i had ever been in, lots of storms prev. winter, and he was stuck, and I should not say this but if you are not moving the hub are not going to lock, duh! and we had the ramp blocked on a sat. people were honking, and yelling, and then driving around and giving us the bird, and by this time they were having the good "who is right" and "who knows it all" fight, so mom and I get out to push... well she is short with a wide bottom, and I thought it was funny, since they were using all kinds of words...and dad was freaking out and racing the motor and we were trying not to get covered with sand... and then it happed, there was a loud click, I recognized it,and jumped back, well mom did not, and she was pushing and putting some ass into it and my dad just took off and she went face in the sand and before he stopped spinning he had covered her, buried her in sand. I expanded my vocabulary that day and my poor dad slept on the couch the whole vacation.
and remember years later he buries the ass end of his 92 truck....
