i have a 2011 4x4 tacoma with a 6in lift and 35" tires. im getting killed in gasmileage right now. and with prices not falling anytime soon. im looking into re-gearing it. what gears would everyone recommend. its NOT a daily driver but i would like to be able to drive it more then now. I also have the TRD supercharger on it so i know that also affects it, but i dont hit final gear until about 75-80 mph. any info you guys/or girls would have would be appreciated. thanks

4.88's are best with 35s and an auto Gears will improve the truck allot, but don't expect huge savings in gas. The tires and the lift pretty well assure you'll be paying through the nose.

wont 4.56 bring you closer to stock and 4.88 just a wee bit more power than stock

If he is looking for better gas mileage then 4.88 will be worse. 4.56s would be best to try and improve MPGs and get your gears to where they should be with the 35in tire. Your going to be over 3k RPMs at 75MPH with 4.88s

Have you done anything to make the speedometer and odometer read accurately? If not, your odometer is accumulating miles at a slower rate, and making your gas mileage appear worse than it actually is.

Example: If your tires are 10% larger and the odometer has not been recalibrated, your odometer is showing 90 miles for every 100 miles you travel. Consider that before re-gearing. I know the gears would make it drive better as well, but if we are only talking mileage, it just might be better than you realize.

Yea but even if he is doing that he is probably only getting like 12-15 MPG with those tires and supercharger with those stock gears. I haven't changed or adjusted my speedo and after calculating my actuall mileage it really only adds like 1-1.5 MPG per tank.

65 is 2200rpm and 75 is 2500. He's got an auto, not a manual. When you gear for bigger tires you have to go a bit lower in gearing than a match to stock because you have allot more rotating mass. With the lift he is pushing more air too. The supercharger does bring the power in sooner so 4.56 might be better in this case. Still, I don't think gearing for gas mileage is going to help much. It would be mainly for drivability.

    This.

Especially considering it not being a DD. You'll never see enough of a return to make it worth it based on economics alone.

    ^Agreed.

I don't understand gas mileage complaints when adding a SC, tires and lift. They don't come for free. If you're gonna spend up on it like that, don't get cheap on it now!

Regardless, just do the math. Miles driven per year / avg gas mileage * avg price per gal. (Of course, convert for metric, etc)

So say you drive it 5k miles/yr. At 12 mpg, that's 416 gal at $3.50 per = $1500. Changing that to 17 mpg would save about $500 a year, which is about $40/mth. So put your numbers in and see what you get. You know the now #'s, so just make the best estimate on your future gas mileage. Figure a worst, avg and best case. See if it pays off to change gearing. A 5 mpg change would be huge, IMO.

On average with my 3" lift, 35s, and full set of armor I get ~16 with 4.56s

I have 35s and I can only get 14-15 in the winter and around 15-16.5 freeway in the summer. with stock gears. But the throttle response would be nicer if i had 4.56s. If I had the coin i would get them in a hearbeat

I have a 2011 TRD sport 4x4 with 37's I do a good amount of highway driving, currently I'm on stock gears and want to get power back but also not be pinging redline at 75mph.

Can someone point me in the right direction to order gears for my truck? I'm not sure what diff's came on the TRD sport 4x4's although I do know that I'll need to change the front carriers to support 4.88's which seem to be close to stock ratio for 37's.

anyone have any advice on website to order from, brand of gears, and exactly everything I need to get this done?

37s huh? U got any pics? With you running 37s you need to Regear ASAP. One other guy on here is running 37s and he is running 4.88s with 4x4.

Correct with 37s and 4.88s you should be right around stock gearing. Obviously you still won't have stock power back but should help immensely over stock gearing.

I got 4.56 rebuilt 3rds from ECGS, I'd go the same route again. It was a pretty easy swap. Just pull your clamshell and 3rd and bolt in new ones. There are some good write ups on here now too so that makes it easier.

Just call ECGS and tell them you want 4.88s with solid sleeve probably and then if you want lockers, now would be the time to do it.

You'd be surprized how much power you still have with the stock gearing on 37's. It moves along just fine I just want to get use of the full spectrum of gears I rarely get into 5th and never 6th. I'll post a pics of the setup for you.

I was fine with 35s on stock gears anywhere flat but hills sucked balls without downshifting to 4k RPM. Thats all I meant.
