Thanks, Chase & Ryan @ East Coast Gear Supply.

I forgot to select 'Add Removal Tool' at check out, so I had to call them up to add it to my order. Flawless transaction. In fact, I think I was lucky enough to make the elite 17. ;).

Bump for ECGS and noisy 4wd Tacomas.

I'll take the bearing removal tool and bushing install tool from one of you when you finish with the install. It's a win-win: you get money back from two otherwise never-to-be-used-again tools, and I get them at a lower price. Heck, if I can get them at a cheap enough price I'll "pay it forward" and send them for free to the next 4x4 Taco owner down the line. :D For real.

On another note, I'm curious to see the long-term reliability & effectiveness of this apparent fix.

I thought about that but I figured I wanted to have my own to keep in case the bushing ever needs replacement...

Okay, nice to see that we can get this finally done. Im just a bit surprised at the price of those tools though. I mean I know this will make our work easier but its just a long bolt and a couple of steel pieces. Just saying is all. It's more than the bushing and its only going to be used once...if all goes well.

    I'll duck my head now...

I would highly recommend purchasing or having the tool available for removal. As the video shows it makes quick easy work of the removal. I have 3 pilot bearing removal tools that would not work to remove the bearing. I then attempted modification to said tools with no luck. Thus leading to the design of the new tool. Every tool is test fitted in a carrier, the tolerances for this tool are very specific as it has to be able to get in between spider gear and needle bearing but be large enough to pull the bearing out. The price point comes from design time, ease of use for consumer, and limited quantity to be sold.

    Thanks, Chase

I for one don't think spending $120 on a $30k truck with $1500 worth of suspension is that big of a deal - especially when you consider the miniscule tolerances required for these parts/tools so that THE TRUCK WILL RUN LIKE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO FROM THE FACTORY. We should all petition Toyota to reimburse us for having to spend this money to make their product work properly haha.

I just ordered mine, with the tool. I know $60 seems like alot for a few pieces of steel and a bolt, but given the amount of work (time) that ECGS has put into this problem, I can guarantee that they are not getting rich off this product!

I've destroyed slide hammers and pullers trying to extract caged needle bearings, only to end up tearing the bearing out piece by piece. Believe me, that custom puller will save you tons of time and headaches, and prevent damage to your housing. Get it.

    This^

ECGS has the only solution available for the vibration problem. Anything else is a band-aid. Including the dealers solution of replacing bad parts with new bad parts.

I don't mind paying for it (ECGS fix).

No need to duck, I totally see where you're coming from. I mean if you went down to "Harbor Freight" and bought some "off the shelf" tool that looked like this and was manufactured by the thousands on automated equipment by low-skill factory workers in China (no slam - just a fact) it would only cost a few bucks.

So what's the difference? Well, this is a custom tool and ECGS has a skilled technician, if not Chase himself, making each one, to very close tolerances.

Tolerances are funny. To the naked eye, something that's manufactured to +/- .05 looks indistinguishable from something that's machined to +/- .001 but the latter one takes considerably more time, skill, and tooling to produce, and that has to be reflected in the cost.

Chase made it possible to buy the tools separately from the bushing. So if folks can get together and split the cost of using the tool amongst several local people, well, more power to ya. Sharing of tools, knowledge, experience is what TW is all about. :)

But as a guy who's dropped the diff out of his truck twice now, let me assure you: the cost of a precision machined handful of metal that makes it possible to remove and replace a bearing accurately and without damage - vs. the cost and hassle of dropping the diff and cracking open the clamshell case is well worth the price of admission.

Standard disclaimers apply: Your mileage may vary, not all customers will qualify for this rate, and falling tools dropped from workers high above may cause injury or death.

I want to know why some people have this vibration and some don't...or how some "fix" it with shims and CB drops...makes me scared to put aftermarket suspension on my new 2011 when I have the 5 yr warranty... why screw with it if you're going to have issues like this to solve or cross your fingers you get "lucky"

    :(

No question. If you're not willing to spend the time and money necessary to run down any "unintended consequences" you shouldn't modify your truck to begin with.

You gotta do your research ahead of time, decide if the potential upside is worth the potential downside, and go into it with eyes wide open.

EDIT: I don't really want to clutter up this thread with unrelated info, but CB (Carrier Bearing) drops and rear-axle shims address rear driveline related vibrations, not front CV axle needle bearing vibrations. Totally different animal. If you have more questions about those, ask them on an appropriate thread or start a new one.
