Holy thread revival! Although I gotta give it to you, you were only 4 hours off of posting exactly a year after the previous post.

I did it to mine and l noticed a big diferance. If you use a hole saw the hole will be a 4 1/2in. to fit the 4in. deckplate. At least it was for mine. X2 way better then a CAI. I have had a K&N CAI on my other truck and didnt notice a differance like I did with the deckplate mod. Hope this helps. Good luck. Keep us posted.:D

Why not just take the whole box out and zip tie the filter to the hose? :D

Just did mine and I agree with the 4.5" hole. I also put in an Airaid intake tube and the thing roars above 3000 rpm. I also noticed a huge difference. Smoother acceleration and it seems more power.

What does this mod do? I can tell it lets more air in but what about numbers? Any good gains?

I did a 6" plate and it fits perfectly. I just adjusted a circle cutter thing for a drill press and it was a perfect circle in the air box.

I'm pretty sure the location of the box on 2nd Gens negates the actual benefits of the mod.

On a second gen can't you just strap a cone filter right to the throttle body? I should go look at our 4.0 4runner to verify

Did the 4" Deckplate install last weekend. The 4.5" Drill Saw was perfect. Had a bit of a problem getting the washers and nuts to fit around the ribs inside the airbox but nothing major. Also installed an Airaid Jr Intake kit (about $100 plus shipping from AdvanceAutoParts.com Part No. 510-734 using the discount code VISA). I could feel and hear improvement immediately after the install. It accelerates smoother and around 2500rpm you can "hear" it start pulling. I especially noticed a difference running up into the mountains. More low end torque and I don't have to shift as much. Plus the sound under load is great! Well worth the cost. I'm making a long highway run this weekend. We'll see what it does to the mileage.

 Nice work! I did it over the summer as well. You are right, 2500rpm and up it sure does sound good. I have not noticed any MPG improvement though. The best thing I noticed was how it does not want to downshift as much going up slight inclines, which is very nice.
