4 cyl. gas mileage

Depends. The 4Runners were slow as hell. My dad had an 87 with the 22RE and the automatic. Ridiculously slow with the whole family in it and loaded up for a trip. On the other hand, we have an 86 1ton with a heavy utility bed on it at work. It has plenty of power to cruise at 70. It does slow down on the hills, but still does 60. For a 26 year old truck with 200K on it, not too bad.

Oh yeah, 4cyl MPG. My work truck (09 2.7 regular cab 2wd 5 speed) gets 18MPG in mixed driving. Mostly in town, mostly with a lead foot, always loaded down with a tall aluminum work shell on it. I'm in California, and the crappy gas out here is definitely a factor.

 

The 31's are killing you in a few ways.

They are taller than stock. Depending on your stock size, you could actually be going 260 or more miles on a tank. This in and of itself doesn't actually change how many gallons you use from point-A to point-B... it just reports fewer miles between point-A and point-B

They are wider than stock = more rolling resistance = worse MPG
They are taller than stock = higher final gear ratio = worse MPG during acceleration, marginally better on the highway, with the caveat of....

... they are taller than stock, the same error that impacts your odometer also impacts your speedometer. If you are reading 70 but actually doing 80 because of the error, you will get no better mileage than anyone else doing 80. Pickups are a brick in the wind and you can pick up an EASY 3-6mpg on the highway by holding your speed down to 60-65 instead of 75-80.


But short story, the 31's are killing you.


Mine? '08 5-lug RC Base. Consistently 24+, with an occasional tank around 25 or so. I've had a couple at 26 but that's rare.
80mph on the highway heading to Austin I was pulling 22.

 

Dog to some but an angel to me. It does exactly what I need it to do, drive me from A to B and occasionaly haul stuff. Having a 4x4 is fun but it gets expensive. I am not tempted to go off roading all weekend wasting money on gas and breaking shit on the trails. I have my Mt. Bike for that which doesnt use gas. This truck is perfect for me.

 

23.2 MPG last fill commuting to work, 60 miles round trip. Kept the speed at around 70 mph.

Low light came on at 405 miles and filled up at 435 miles.

06 SR5 5 speed manual 4x4 with 265/70-16 Michelin LTX tires mounted on Konig countersteer wheels and 85,000 miles on it. Everything else is stock except synthetic fluids in the diffs, transfer case and engine.


EDIT,, just filled up again (430 on the tank) and had pulled my motorcycle trailer with two bikes on it for a short distance (50miles) and got 22.7 with most speed at 75 mph.

 

Win!

Can't bring myself to beat my daily driver to death. Bike keeps me in shape as well!

 

In my 5spd 4X4 Reg cab with about 40% highway, 20% city, and 40% backroads I'm getting close to 20mpg. Going to see what I can do to increase that though.

 

Thanks for the feed back man. It does make sense how the 31's are doing that. When I go to 33's now that's really gonna mess up my mpgs

 

And your transmission if you don't regear.
That's a LOT of weight to get moving with the stock gears.

 

1998 2.4L 5 speed extended cab, went from 27MPG to 30MPG by inflating tires to 36PSI.
Been doing it for two years now.
otherwise all stock except for flomaxx muffler.

 

Im getting between 17/23 combinded

 

2.7L+Auto Tranny= 13mpg. Am I alone or does anyone else have this issue?

 

just for fun...changed my driving style....an for the first tank, mpg jumped about 2 mpg. it's tough, but it works.

i have a 02 prerunner w/v6 and am getting 18. mine is a 2wd. is your a 4wd? also mine has a auto tranny.

 

That's bad.

Are you running oversized tires? That it a double-edge sword. The larger tires are heavy and hurt your gearing, so that hurts mileage, but they also make your odometer read slow, which gives you an error in calculated MPG.

If your tires are 10% larger than stock, then your mileage is being calculated 10% lower than it actually is.

 

He's Prerunner... all Prerunner are 2WD.

 

I'm running 31x10.50 all terrains but I think its the combo of the auto tranny paired with the 3.91's.

 

My 05 Pre Runner gets around 20mpg Highway (around 70mph) and 18 city...... I have no idea how to improve this. I don't have a lead foot and i'm running stock tires. The sticker the truck came with advertises 27HWY!

 

About 20 MPG on the highway at 75MPH at 80MPH its more like 15 MPG. Then again lifted and leveled 5 lug with 245/75R16 Toyo Open Country AT II.

 

21.5-22 MPG at 75-80MPH, 45 miles daily commute to work. I am running 31x10.5R15 BFG TA KOs.
