Tire Ply! Here we go again!!

What tire ply are you all running? i was told that a 10 ply (nitto terra grappler) was too much for TACOMAS (Stupid in my opinion)? is this true(if it is whats the best ply to run on my tacoma)?

 

10 ply is an E rated tire, you don't need to run an E rated tire on a Taco, but you can.
It is going to be heavier which will lower your mpg slightly and it is going to be stiff, so your ride is going to be harsher.

I'm running Nitto TG's, C rated in a 265/70/17.

Just FYI in case someone doesn't know...
B rated= 4 ply
C rated= 6 ply
D rated= 8 ply
E rated= 10 ply
F rated= 12 ply

I just ordered the new Wrangler DuraTrac's I got a great deal on them but they are a 10 ply. I hope they don't ride to harsh. Are any of you running an E rated tire? What do you think?

I would go with a D rating, E is a little much for Taco. When you go to air down a E rated tire it will not flex very good since the taco is on the lighter side. My D rated MTR's flex is good.

 

I've done some trails near Socorro in Escondida. How do you get to the trails in the San Mateo mountains?

 

10-ply is way to stiff, and if your towing a 20ft. 5th wheel then they would be ideal. Each tire has a maximum Load capacity, that corresponds to the tires "ply". 6-ply is 1,000lbs. each tire, I believe. and 10-ply is like 2,300lbs for each tire. 6-ply is an excellent choice for Tacoma's since they are not that heavy. Unlike the Full size brother's, which usually run 8 or 10-ply tires. One more thing you should know. If you plan on ever airing down your tires i.e. in Sand, mud, off-road. Good luck getting flex out of the tires, or sidewall. The tires are going to be super stiff, due to the heavy ply.

 

my nittos are 8ply i do beleive

 

e tires are going to be brutal inflated to 35 psi.

My old 89 4runner had e load 32.11.5.15 all terrains on it. lifted 3" it rode OK, but could have been better if I put say D tires on it.

It all depends on how you use your truck.

 

I have a set of 10 ply tires on my truck at the moment. If it wasn't for the fact I drive the truck on construction sites that have had the roadways mined, leaving sharp rock edges, I definitely would have went with some 6 or 8 ply tires.

Not only does the tire cost considerably more, it will no doubt be more harsh of a ride than say, a 6 ply.

 

Some of the initial reviews of the DuraTrac are that the sidewalls ride soft or even a little squishy. I guess well see since my tires come in tomorrow!

Just put on C rated Bridgestone Revos today, firmed up the ride considerably from the stock BFG's but still not too harsh.

 

Ok forgive but...where are you reading the tire ply ratings at? On the tire itself?

 

No. the LADY as talked about up in the beginning of thread.. told me that the nitto terra grappler i wanted was 10 ply? i haven't actually gone to the place to check them out but im going tomorrow, so well see!

 

I mean, where do you see the A, B, C, D etc tire rating? Is it on the side of the tire? If so, where?

 

I personally have no idea, thats just what the lady told me, when you order them online you can always see the tire rating but as in visually see i wouldnt know!

 

You should be able to find the load range of your tires near the "max weight _____ @ __ PSI" marking. You tires should say "Load Range __"

 

I just ended up going with the nittos in a 265\70-18
