she took one of my photos from colorado and in about 5 minutes took it from looking ok to looking pretty amazing. I'm going to have to sit down this weekend and play with them a little bit.

Herc's are actually the smallest of the airlift frames. To give you a frame of reference: a standard airlift pallet (463L) measures 108" x 88" with a loadable surface 104" x 84". A standard Herc will take 6 of these loaded to a height of 104" (generally speaking). The L100 is a stretch Herc and will take 8 pallets.

    A C17 takes 18 pallets in a side by side configuration. A C-5 takes 36.

    Just for "gee whiz." ;)

A lot of it was some of the features of photoshop that i didn't know about. First she took the photo and fixed the blownout spots with something in the photo-raw feature.

Then she applied a gradient ND filter to select areas which make the sky pop and the rocks in the bottom right look more natural. She used a feature to light up the side of my truck as if i had a flash. Then she used some hue/saturation adjustment with a spot tool to make some of the fall colors really pop.

here is the pic as i took it. I don't have the after, but i'll play with it to see if I can get the same results

    exactly.

i was looking at either finding a used 40d or the nikon d3100. i looked at the dpreview comparisons, and image quality is (to my eye) pretty much the same. but build quality of the 40d is obviously better (I like durable things, it's why i own thinkpads, milspec phones, and a tacoma :p) and over 2x fps of continuous shooting.

i should go canon so i can use my gf's lenses though haha.

I work right by the airport here in Des Moines and coming into work i heard this strange noise that vaguely sounded like an airplane but was a really deep sound. I looked up and there was a c-5 that had just taken off. It was just barely moving and looked like it could fall out of the sky at any moment. It was amazing to see it just motoring right along.

It's the size of the thing...distorts your sense of momentum when watching it in the air. They aren't slower or faster (again generally speaking) than any other airliner/freighter...it just looks that way.

the lenses will make a big difference in the quality of the shots too. If she has some good lenses, then i would definitely go canon to take advantage of her lenses and not have to spend more money.

I've seen all 3 up close and of course the Herc does their touch and gos at the Kenai airport so I got buzzed a lot when I was on the beach there
I knew what they could hold because I was told not to make anything over a specific width and length...not going to do any good if they can't fit it through the door!

I love RAW...photo editing for dummies  As long as you're in focus you can fix just about everything else about a photo there.

I know, the physics are there to make it fly so it won't fall out of the sky. It's just soooo freekin huge that it just looks like it isn't going anywhere.

That' why i chose to shoot in RAW. This photo isn't the sharpest, but it will do for now to play with.

    Yeah, it's that time.

Not yet today, but we're supposed to later on.... If it was my choice, I'd give up, but that little girl is gonna be a heart breaker when she gets older.... She just pouts a little and I break down :anonymous:
