What is everyone's intake on this? Trayvon Martin's case. If you don't know this boy, he was fatally shot by a neighborhood watch patrol. The guy who shot him was not arrested. Trayvon only had a ice tea and skittles. I dont know about you guy's, but i was taught to only use lethal force if you're faced with it, or you feel your life is threatened.

I didn't know skittles suddenly became a life threatening situation.

    Now the President is involved.

He should worry about the economy. No body exactly knows what happened. I think the guy was following him with a gun he got scared tried to run, the man caught up with him they got in a fight ( the man had a bloody nose, grass stains, and a wound on the back of his head) and the dude shot him. People are trying to make it out like the boy had a yo yo and lolipop and the guy shot him out of hate. I dont think it went down like that. Florida is a stand your ground state. If you are threatened you have the right to defend yourself just like Alabama. Its a mess for sure.

It's one thing to be protected by the "stand your ground" law when randomly attacked, but creating a confrontation by following someone after the 911 operator tells you to stop seems like a situation that would fall outside the bounds of the law.

IMO, retaliating after intentionally causing an altercation should not be considered self-defense.

That strikes me as an odd statement. The police didn't kill Trayvon Martin and weren't even on the scene when it happened so it's impossible to say that they're at fault for his death. George Zimmerman had a CC permit for his firearm, so again there was no action for the police to take up until the murder.

Unless you're implying something else.

Keep the politics out of the thread, folks. Discussion of the case at hand is one thing but keep the rest of it to yourselves.

CC permit or not, I would have hoped the police would take their firearm...

Depends on the situation and interpretation of the law by the investigators on the scene. Regardless, how can you say the police are at fault for the murder? Taking the firearm when they arrived on the scene would not have changed the situation.

Weather the guy is innocent or guilty I cant say, but think he needs his conceal carry rovoked.

I beleive you should never put youself in a situation that you normally would not just because you are armed.

The guy was following the victim (his own choice) even after 911 dispatcher told him it was not necessary.

He chased after the kid, and "probably" initiated contact. there is nothing "defensive" about that.

Doubt he would be so bold without being armed.

Investigate everything and jail the SOB if he is guilty.

Based on the reports involving the 911 call, this guy needs to be jailed.
It is no longer self defense once you start following someone. End of discussion.

Why is it okay for a black man to shoot a black man? but don't let a white man shoot a black man or vise versa. Add a Mexican into it and it is a media whore site.. I blame the dumb ass press for keeppng this shit alive.. A black man is shot every day in Balitimore by a Mexican. No one cares. Open yuor mouth then all the blackness and stupidity comes out. I bet they will be on Oprah soon. Hell maybe it was self defense.. we dont know.. I don't know. I am just tired of hearing and seeing it everywhere. What next billboards?

The whole situation stinks. Creating a confrontation isnt self defense. He was twice the size of the kid so i doubt he felt threatened enough to use his gun. This guy has called 911 46 times in the last year to report suspicious black people who were doing nothing wrong. This guy should have no defense under the stand your ground law.

Not taking it away forever, just until things can be settled down. I'm just suprised it was not confiscated.

If the watch guy really iniated contact, then wouldn't that make him the initial agressor? To me justified use of him shooting that kid would have to be that the kid had a knife, gun, any other blunt object or thing that could be used to KILL you. A bag of skittles can't kill you to my knowledge.

If everyone got to go shoot everyone there wouldn't be a point in police.

Man, there is a lot of racism going on here lately...

All that aside, I agree that there needs to be a very thorough investigation. I think this case casts a very long shadow over the role of Stand Your Ground laws and the legal dilemmas they create. (namely placing the burden of proof on the prosecutor to show that the shooter DID NOT act in self-defense -- which basically pits the word of the shooter against proof since the person who could best refute the allegations is usually dead).

I also find it eerily quiet on this board, on which many members usually jump at every opportunity to tout Stand Your Ground.

    EDITED.

That gets into shaky Constitutional territory. Many gun owners own more than one, and if that was the case here, should the police have confiscated all of his firearms?

The determination of guilt vs. innocence should come first and punishment should follow only if he's found guilty. Knee-jerk confiscation of his firearms opens a can of worms and sets a very bad precedent.

I wonder how the wording of the laws are according to self-defense/Stand Your Ground.

I personally agree that if you start an altercation, you should not be provided the benefits of Stand Your Ground defense. However, the law may be structured that if at any point during an altercation you feel your life is in danger you have the right to defend yourself.

    Maybe I'll look that up...
