Say from the spring seat on the front shock to the top plate is 10" when set at stock setting (I don't know what the actual measurement is, just an example). The coil occupies that 10". Now you move the bottom coil seat up 1", meaning the same coil can only occupy 9" of space now. The 1" that you lose is preloaded into the spring.

Springs have a spring rate, they gain strength as you compress them. I believe stock is 540#/in so if you compress the spring 1", you just made it that much stronger. That's why preloading coils makes them ride stiffer.

There is a little more to it than that but that's the basic version.

None yet, starting over!! OME lift w/ Dakars & 885's Remote Start w/ window control
Which is why going with an OME setup, which includes new springs with the shocks, is prefered to just throwing some 5100s at 2.5 with the stock springs?

Basically, yes. Especially if you have a TRD Off Road. The OR has progressive coils so they gain strength quicker. If you preload them to 2.5", they will ride very rough.

I too am looking for a similar lift. I just picked up an 06' TRD Sport 4x4. I am interested in doing it as correct as possible for under 1k. Which do you guys recommend? The OME kit seems to be a decent pick for the price range. Can someone link me to a decent place to pick one up?

    Thanks!

Btw I am new to the pick-up world so bare with me please. Just sold my dropped IS300 for the Tacoma. You guys look like you are having way too much fun so I figured I would give it a go.

Check out Toytec Lifts, Wheelers Offroad or Downsouth Motorsports. They are all vendors on here, and Toytec offers a discount to TW members. Downsouth doesn't show the OME stuff on their website but they do sell the kits.
