Yeah the stuff they did to keep it a secret was prett darn cookey. The would paint black aircraft shapes all over the Tarmac so the Russian spy satellites wouldn't be able to tell which one was a real plane...

Mind you this was back during the cold war...

We had no idea that the plane even existed when we saw it. The MPs were everywhere at the KAFB terminal and no cameras were allowed out of the case.

I guess it was spying over RVN, maybe North VietNam & China too .. who knows. ...

It was our last day of real freedom and we were more concerned about going south to RVN. ...

Yep! In SoCal right now playing Air Force on Edwards. I got to see the first F-35 NIGHT time air refueling last night. That jet is amazing.

I found out not too long ago that the US and British forces made hot air balloons (which were tethered to the ground) in the shapes of planes, jeeps, tanks, you name it and placed them in various areas to confuse the German surveillance people and draw attention AWAY from Normandy prior to D-day. I thought that that was pretty ingenious.

Double   Not only a new plane but wondering who it belonged to, what it was exactly....

They even dropped 1800 blow up dummies behind German lines looking like US Airborne troops and confused the hell out of them.

We did not see a good "side on view" of the SR-71 at that time.

We were outside the terminal and heard the giant roar first ... then saw ... what looked like 2 attached black pencils with jet thrust coming out of the tails (viewed at the end of the runway).

There were 3 other helicopter pilots with me who also saw it and we knew that we were witnessing early history of this weird aircraft but had no idea what it was.

The SR-71 still holds many speed records; I believe it set several on its last "official" flight. There is one at the Hill Aerospace Museum in Ogden, UT if you want to see one up close and a whole bunch of other neat planes too. If you are ever traveling to San Francisco or Portland from the Midwest it's worth the side trip.

I notice a lot of you from the Wichita area here at TacomaWorld. I've had relatives working at Boeing in Wichita pretty much continuously since they built B-29s there, my cousin still works out of there but actually on overseas projects so his team might not be affected that much by the closure.

Hopefully he's not. The commercial side of Boeing was sold 6 years and is now called Spirit Aerosystems (My employer). We still make mostly Boeing aircraft but we also build parts and OEM replacements for several different aircraft manufactures. The military side of Boeing still exists (for now) but is much much smaller than it used to be. Wichita just won't be the same without Boeing around anymore but I guess that's just how the cookie crumbles.

My cousin's been in Italy with his team for a few years now. He is working with their military on a Boeing contract so he's probably working on these KC-767s:

My close friend works for spirit as an enginerd. And what is funny it Tinker_troy works in the same office as him. And even funnier, my fiancee is originally from Newton. All her family lives up there still. Thats a heck of a commute to work every day.

Those New KC's are sweet looking. Only see 'em every now and then.

It's not too bad of a commute. Thirty miles or so one way. Thank heavens for carpooling. I wasn't aware Tink worked out here too. You learn something new everyday.

    Lots.
I'd agree with everything he said. But I would actually put the 117 ahead of the 22.
