Least manly truck question...

...but one of the most important: carrying babies.

Wondering if people who use their truck as a family vehicle and chime in with a brief bit on what car seat [infant] you use, and how well it fits in our trucks [double cab]. We're looking at specifically a peg perego car seat, they only make one model so it's 'that one' if you have one of this brand. Thanks.

 

If they are afraid to ask about a car seat for a truck, then maybe those people shouldn't have a truck, or a baby. Being responsible takes a lot of growing up.

I have a Chicco Keyfit 30 base and car seat mounted in the center seat position of the back seat. Fits good without issues. I used car seat bars built into the truck for mounting the base.



When mounting the Base, put as much weight as you can into it when tightening the center strap. if I get a chance I will take a picture later today.

 

I distinctly remember being stuffed in the hatchback of a Chevette when I was 5, or so. I'm so glad safety has improved these days, my babies are a few years past being in bassinets, but there is an endless supply of consumer reviews of seats which is Immensely helpful.

 

Good looking kids, Ploof. We're reading a lot of reviews on specific seats, just wondering about Tacoma specific applications. Hard to come by on a consumer website. Thought here would be the best place to find that info. Thanks.

 

My 9 month old is about to outgrow her seat. What is a good seat for my extra cab? Mine is a 97 so there is no passenger airbag. My wife prefers her in the rear but I think the convertible seat is going to have to go up front. Anybody have experience with access or xtra cab carseats?

 

Which car seats are you using, They look like they have a very narrow back and don't take up a lot of room. We just replaced the car seat in my Wife's car, and I will need to get a new one for my truck soon. Does that model grow with the kids?

 

The Graco convertible infant seat I used only fit in the middle. The "big girl" seat my 3yo daughter uses now fits fine , though.

And it is a manly topic because a real man takes care of his children.

 

I've used the Eddie Bauer one in both my first gen and the 2nd gen. No complaints except the seat digs into the fabric and dents it on the backseat where it is.

 

Graco Snug Ride for the infant and Graco 3 in 1 for the toddler to kid years.

Another important bit of info to consider is your size. I am 6 feet tall, the infant car seat with the base does not fit behind me, without the base it can squeeze in. The best spot for the carrier is the middle, but once you have 2 kids, it is very tough to get 2 bulky seats next to each other so the carrier is behind my wife's seat (she is 5'3").

I have a Britax Boulevard 70 CS Convertible car seat in my double cab. It has one of the highest safety ratings and is good for up to a 70 lbs kid. It has three positions for different age kids. Right now I have it facing the rear and it fits great. Have one in my wife's subaru too. Tried the one from my wife's car in my access cab before I wrecked it but it did not fit too well. Amazon has the best price and if you are prime its two day free shipping. Good luck. I know this is an important decision and I am glad I went with the britax. Have another girl on the way and I just said to my wife today that I guess we are going to need a couple more britax's.

 

I dont know what seats they are, but my buds wife was more comfortable having their kids ride in my tacoma than his f150. Like mentioned before, got as much weight on the base to get it tight and everything fit well and never had a problem.

 

I used a Cosco seat in the back of my 2000 extended cab Tacoma. It didn't need as much depth as many other seats.

Thanks for the info so far guys. I guess the manly thing in my post title was a little off, probably the most manly question I've asked so far in truth. I'll keep the weight in mind when shopping next weekend and I'll include pics of what I got in here when I get it set up. Thanks again.

Congrats on the addition! We put a Chicco Keyfit 22 w/ base in the middle position of our DC. 3 yr old sits behind the driver (usually me 5ʻ8") in a Britax Marathon, wife sits next to the baby, behind the passengers seat. 6 yr old sits in passenger seat in a Recaro booster. Thatʻs when we all need to pile in to go to baseball or some other "dirty" activity.

The Chicco fits perfectly between the two front seats but if youʻre taller than me, might not. Or if you drive leaning way back. I usually set my seat back straight up.

And like some of the others have mentioned, put as much weight as you can on the base when youʻre strapping it down. I usually sit on mine, yank it tight, then turn around and drive my knee into it so that it pushes back as well as down and tighten again.

Well I'm expecting my first in Aug. we bought a travel system by Graco. Haven't tried it in either vehicle yet though. BTW Congrats!

 

Once we upgraded from the punkin seat for newborns and infants we got a set of Safety 1st Complete Air 65 Convertible Car Seats for our trucks for the boy. Note that this model has the removable lumbar pad and side impact cushions and supports up to 65 pound kids. Many do not support that much weight without having to replace it and with it being a convertible, or adjustable it can be adjusted to his weight changes and increase in height. He rode in it from St. Louis, Mo to Prescott, AZ and back and never complained about being uncomfortable. But to be honest if yours is anything like mine once strapped into the "vehicle commander" position and the truck is moving, most of the time he is passing out before I get off our street.

If you are expecting and don't already have a car seat watch the local vendors such as babies r us as many times they offer 50% off buy back sale discounts if you bring in an old seat or stroller. In the United States a "certified baby seat inspector" will check to make certain that your seat is within whatever the legal limit is for seat age and that it has all of the mandated safety attachment points and whatnot before they will let you leave the hospital with your new baby. A used seat can many times be found for pennies at jumble sales and then traded in at one of these sales to net you a new one for a fairly reasonable savings. Don't know which way you intend to go but with diaper budgets being what they are savings are always welcome in our home.

And another suggestion is to snatch up something like this car seat upholstery protector pad as it will keep the seat corners from damaging the upholstery and if it has the small organizer sewn into the lower front flap it provides a place to stash backup gear like an emergency diaper or toys and stuff. Mine has saved me more than once when I split without his diaper bag.

For those that are expecting and haven't tested the new baby seat gear out yet I suggest that you do now before you get to crunch time and find out that you need to make some exchanges. And don't worry about the thread title, your gonna be a parent, looking out for your little ones well beyond the years that they are no longer little is part of the job.
