I was wondering if Chilton or Haynes has made a repair manual for the 2012 Tacoma yet? I checked Amazon and I believe the latest Tacoma repair manual they have goes up to 2009. I checked with my local NAPA and it was 2009 as well. Is there a place I can order the Toyota factory shop manual to do my own work when needed if there is no Haynes/Chilton? What do you use? Thanks

Haynes is kinda crappy especially with wiring diagrams...chilton is MUCH as far as accurate content covering the different trim levels and the oem would be best, though ive always preferred to have a hard copy over a digital one

I think Haynes and Chilton are the same now. I bought a Chilton for my 05 and it said haynes publishing company somewhere on it. The method for checking the trans fluid is completly different from the accepted method of rigging the A/T oil temp light to come at the correct temp. The maintenence schedules are different from the Toyota owners manual.
    Haynes sucks

I bought a Chilton for another vehicle a while back. As fixnfly said, Haynes and Chilton are the same now. My humble opinion is they are worthless for anyone but the novice. It is a shame if Toyota is not making the factory shop manual available. I have had factory shop manuals for several vehicles over the years and found them well worth the cost.

    +1

Used to be Haynes was good. They still supposedly shoot and assemble the manual through an actual teardown, but it's only one model, so if your car is a different engine or trim level, no pictures and the text is guesswork.

For my '95 Suburban, I needed both manuals. One covered HVAC... the other just said "take it to the shop, AC system is not owner-serviceable"
But the one that didn't cover the AC system did include not only all of the OBD-I codes, but it also included the OBD ABS codes and instructions on how to jumper the OBD-I connector to retrieve them.

I was PISSED when I "Amazoned" both the Haynes and Chiltons for my '08 Taco and found the two to be identical.

Wow, I'm starting to have regrets forking over 25k cash for my 2012 Tacoma. Now Toyota wont release a 2012 shop manual:mad:. Sounds like the fix is in. They have done their best to gather your data by force. I guess on the positive side Tacomas hold value well. I may end up dumping it once an issue arrives after the 3/36k warranty:( . In the mean time I'll just get the Chilton 05- 09 manual. Its my fault for not researching this stuff before hand. It never pays to trust corporations, nor their relationship with the government. Thanks for the info, guys.

Give us a fucking break and leave your tinfoil hat at the door.

Toyota does NOT download information on your driving habits during routine dealer visits.
They do not provide information to law enforcement without a court order.

Hell, when people were claiming their accelerators were sticking, Toyota had to fly engineers out from Japan to retrieve the information stored in the system because there was not a SINGLE terminal in the US dealerships capable of reading it!

Haha, you regret buying a truck because the haynes manual goes up to 09? If you need one that bad, then you don't need to be wrenching on it.

And I'm pretty sure Toyota has better things to do than pay people to sit and watch live data of consumers driving habits. So relax, no one gives a shit about what your doing.

    Hi all.

Toyota has stopped printing the manuals because they, like many other manufacturers before them (and all of them soon) they have an online site with all the info.

Toyotas site is the 'Technical Information Sytem' and for a small fee you can subrcribe for a limited time and get the info you need.

    Cheers
    Ray.

    Ya, and it's complete bullshit.

I want a paper manual that I can carry out to the garage, my parking lot.... or the bottom of a muddy canyon in the hills... wherever I might need to work on my truck.

Sure, I can hit my WiFi from my garage, and MAYBE from the parking lot, so I could use my notebook for that, but it's not going to help me 50 miles from civilization with no cell coverage.

I REALLY want the manual for my 12. Here is the link for the subscription. I don't think it's very cheap. I was wondering if you subscribed you can print it out like a manual. What type of format is it in? Depending on the feedback I may subscribe for a month and download it all. Any input???

Interesting that there's no printed version available for 2012. I found this, didn't subscribe so I have no idea what is printable. Here's the link and the prices:

Agreed. I subscribed for the minimum time just to take a look at what they had to offer, and all the chapters and pages are set up to view INDIVIDUALLY. There is no way to download the whole thing at once. So it is set up for online viewing only, although once you get to a section, you can print all two pages of it. Not very efficient, and very disappointing. However, if you are in a pinch, and need specific help immediately, fork out the $15 and print that specific section. Or, spend two days non-stop downloading each section, and painstakingly compile the whole thing back together. Not worth the effort, imho though.

    Hi all.

    Hi Catwoman.

I got every scrap of info on my '12 Taco there is at TIS - including :
    - Repair Manual
2596 files that I arranged into 756 folders
    - Electrical Wiring Diagram
64 files that I arranged into 8 folders
    - Body Repair Manual
79 files that I arranged into 4 folders
2005 to 2012 MY, includes every dimension there is
    - Tech Tips
    10 files
    - Service Bulletins
    USA, 24 files
    Canada, 12 files
    I live in Canada
    - Service Campaigns
    1 file
    - Collision Repair Info Bulletins
    1 file
    - Wire Harness Repair Manual
    5 files
    - Accessories
    Diagnostic Guides, 4 files
    Installation Instructions, 29 files
    - Automatic Transmission Repair Manual
30 files that I arranged into 13 folders
    For the 2005 A340F
My truck has the A750F 5 speed auto but I thought I would get the manual anyway
    - Tacoma New Car Features
226 files that I arranged into 84 folders
I got these for every MY from 1995 to 2012
These have some fantastic info in them, esp the 2005 MY, the first of the second Gen
    - Technician Reference Guides
156 files that I arranged into 14 folders
    - Technical Training Courses
231 files that I arranged into 25 folders
    25 mechanics courses, great stuff.
I am already highly knowledgeable on vehicles but there are things to learn in these
    - Assorted other minor stuff
I got all the tech magazines, techstream info, the '12 brochure, the '12 dealer model reference, assorted Entune info (my truck doesn't have Entune), Universal audio info (my truck doesn't have this either)

Other info I have obtained from other sources online (including this site):
    - A great pdf on the 1GR-FE (V6 - 4 liter)
    From here on the forum
Not in any info I got from TIS but I'm thinking it is among the Tundra info there
    My truck has the 1GR
    - The '12 Owners Manual
    - The '12 Owners Manual Supplement
Both of the above, so I don't have to dig them out of the glove box when I want to look something up
    - The '12 US Warranty and Maintenance Guide
    As a reference
    - A VIN decoder sheet that I edited with my VIN and highlighted the appropriate lines

I got a 2 day standard subscription for 15 bucks US at first. I then got the 75 buck standard 1 month subscription and obtained all the info above in about 15 days of my spare time.

All of the info is already in PDF format that you can dload, except :
    - The EWD
This is viewed in a special viewer. You can hit the print button and it will open the diagram in a PDF format that you can then dload. As I stated above, there are 64 diagrams.
    - The Repair Manual
This is viewed in a special viewer for MY 2005 and later IIRC. This one is much more time consuming ... This is the info I wanted in the first place before I knew about all the other resources that were available. The viewer has a print button that will bring up your print options. I have adobe acrobat loaded so one of the printers to choose from is the acrobat distiller that will render the print job into a PDF file. Just to be clear ... 2596 files that must be distilled, named, and arranged into folders that correspond to how the manuals (there are 4) are arranged - one by one. I wouldn't want to count the hours this took ...
I suppose one could print to paper but some of the files have many pages. I bet the entire RM would print into 10, 000 pages !

I called the Material Distribution Center of TIS before I ever went online. They informed me the 4 RM's are not going to be printed from now on. They were going to cost around 180 bucks each (!) even if they were to be available, so 75 bucks and a bunch of your spare time is still worth it at TIS IMO.

My truck folder is currently 2.46 GB with 5165 files !

Just a FYI that mucho info can be obtained albeit, some of it through much patience ...

    Cheers
    Ray.

It's almost as if they expect to get paid for compiling all of that information and making it available....

Wow. I was going to do the same thing, because I thought $15 was cheap for a little bit of work on my part to download and assemble the thing. But the massiveness of it was daunting. I have a folder on my computer just like you do for the truck info pages. When I saw how haphazardly it was arranged though, and how difficult it would be to locate the info you wanted, I was discouraged though. And it was taking longer than the two days I had given myself. I think your idea is better, pay a little more and work in chunks. The click-click-click, save-save-save process is very tedious.

But as you say, having the authentic information is very valuable. Personally, I think we should all receive a copy of it when we buy our trucks, for part of the purchase price. I mean, we spend $30,000 on a truck, which is a lot of money; throwing in a $200 manual shouldn't be an issue to Toyota. When we buy instruments at work, we get manuals with them. If nothing else, even if we don't try to rebuild engines ourselves, we should know how they work, so we have a better appreciation of the complexity of them, or so we can better troubleshoot when there is a problem. That should be the attitude of Toyota, educating their customers to be proactive in caring for their vehicles, which will save their time and money as well when things go wrong!

I'm sure the reason is they are less and less in demand, and it wasn't cost effective... pretty sure they'd still making them if they could make money. I can't see a company saying, "Hey, we should stop making these manuals we're making money on." There's no reason to do that...well, except to now collect money from our computers. But I've put tinfoil over my router, and my hard-wired connecters use tinfoil RJ-45 connecters.

Dealer techs have terminals at their workstations.

Private owners have always gone with Chilton/Haynes.

The retail market for factory service manuals.... not for people who WANT them (everyone), but for people who are willing to actually pay the $80-$200 for them, is measured in the thousands.
No, it's not economical for them to print them.
