    For what its worth...

Red dodge behind me had open diff's. He weighs 5,000 pounds. He couldn't get any traction up that hill. I weigh 4900 pounds and made it just fine with my rear locked. I even pulled him out. Without the locker I would have been just as stuck as him.

True but a mechanically locked rear will save you when needed. I'm not so sure about a computer deciding when to apply a brake to my wheels. I'm waiting for someone's Atac to fail on them. I'm glad i didn't get the 09. I only want the fucking brakes to apply when I decide.

    i love snow runs..

we were on one last weekend and came into a situation where we were stuck on a sharp turn with a nice incline..that turn also was was very off camber to the inside and into the side of the mountain. we kept sliding into the side of the mountain and couldn't progress forward. once i turned on the front locker only to do a "front dig" it was easy for me to get out.

Problem with the locker is I just fish tail everywhere anytime my rear starts to slip. I have to turn it off and just run in 4lo when crawling along.

in the snow i only use the lockers when i absolutly have to, onlly when i need it. since im just cruising the snow and not worrying about crawling over rocks and what not, im not worried about popping a bead so im usually aired down to 10 psi which helps with traction

? I said a slight loss in turning radius. I never mentioned rain and neither did DavidK.... Its quite obvious it would spin out easily. I drove my truck with the rear locked for 4 months, it wasnt that big of a deal and I wouldnt say it handled like shit, nor did it make me randomly fall off cliffs.

I have proven to myself driving on roads that required a locker in the past, and drove it with A-TRAC only.

A-TRAC is the technical 'new' automatic locker system from Toyota, and while having two other Tacomas with the rear locker before A-TRAC was added to the Tacoma (but on other Toyota and Lexus rigs for years), I wanted to see how A-TRAC compared to the rear locker in passing over the same (or worse) terrain. It passed with flying colors.

For those who don't understand the 'braking part' of how it works... It doesn't brake tires to stop movement... it brakes just the amount needed to match the tire rotation across the axle, so you can keep moving... a locked differential does the same thing (matches rotation across the axle) so you can keep moving. Without A-TRAC or a locker, a non traction tire will spin and a traction tire sits still. Limited slip improves the problem, but it still allows some spinning of the non-traction tire and drive power is not even across the axle.

What makes A-TRAC more of an advantage over earlier Tacos with only the rear locker, is that it works on the front and rear.

Now, you who don't have A-TRAC or have not used it in a situation that would normally require lockers, just are having a real hard time accepting that Toyota can have such a good device... and I am wondering why, when you can believe Toyota makes other great items?

    oh here we go again...

I don't even bother reading the crap.

Everything besides open/open is for people who can't or don't know how to drive offroad. Only wussies need traction aids.
