    Hey Guys,

Don't kill me please! All my research led me here. Long story short my engine on my 2005 Grand Cherokee died. I'm looking to swap the Next Gen version of that engine...more HP....more Tourque. It uses the sames transmission and is basically the same.

Unfortunately many Grand Cherokee owners dont' swap engines and I found dozens of examples of Toyota owners doing it. Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as engine conversions on these boards...just looking to see how Toyota owners all deal with it....the computer issues....etc.

Thanks so much...it's good to be here.

    Joe

sounds like a mess the number one answer is sell what you have and buy another car as far as from the money standpoint. But you would probably want to swap the entire computer system that is paired with the next gen engine

Most def. agree that it would be easier to buy another car. But I won't be able to sell my current Jeep cause the engine is shot...5-6000 to rebuild my engine...eh.

I'd rather sink a few more thousand in and convert it. Thanks for the response!

Im just saying see how much you can get for your jeep you might be surprised, then see what you want to do, the cheapest would probably be to put an identical engine back in

My current engine, a Chrysler Gen 1 4.7L V8, dead...the crank rod bearing busted and it needs to be rebuilt.

In the 2008 Grand Cherokee they came out with the Gen 2 4.7L V8...it uses the same trans as the 2005...

Just looking to see how Toyota owners have dealt with this.

The only thing i can really help with here is its all about matching....

The engine has to match the tranny and the ecu...

so if you want the new engine everything has to match..sounds like the transmission matches so thats a money saver.

are you an auto or manual tranny...because if auto you need to make sure the new computer works with the transmission. otherwise this could cause an issue.. (im actually dealing with this on my bronco now)

other things to look at...hopefully the engine mounts are the same.

other than stuff like that I dont know what your questions could be.

well our computer took a crap..so we needed a replacement...

were basically looking around the country for an identical computer...they are very tempermental..atleast on the fords..its actually becoming such an issue that were about to say screw it and do an LS swap into the bronco and completely replace everything and throw a manual in it.

5-6000 to rebuild? Yeah right, shop around, someone seen you coming a mile away! An 05 grand cherokee can't be worth a whole lot more than that if in decent running condition. You could buy a brand new crank and rod(s) and still rebuild it for under 1/2 of that.

    The true answer is below.

You'd get better info on a heep forum, but my best guess would be swap engine, ecm, and wiring harness. Nothing more than a guess, and as you saw, my spelling sux too.:) Unless there are big power, milage, or reliability improvements in the newer hampster, I'd throw in a good used 2005 engine, then sell it, and buy a tacoma. Thats the best advice I can give, no BS.:)

    Oh dear.......

You really and truely should think about getting RID of that thing.

My mother-in-law has a 99 Grand Cherokee and that thing has cost her more in repairs in the last 2 years than the car is worth!! Yeah, it has a 4.7L in it. Thank God, the engine & tranny haven't crapped out yet. Everything else has...... :(

    Wanna buy it??

I feel like leaving it in the middle of the city and hope someone steals it.

    But seriously.... visit www.jeepsunlimited.com

I'm a member there...not much knowledge on this topic.

I'm not surprised this happened. I've wheeled it pretty hard and taken it far beyond it's limits.

Some swaps are possible in modern vehicles without swapping computers and harnesses, but it's almost impossible to know unless you try.

If I were you I would buy a reman engine for your Jeep and then either drive it or sell it, whichever you feel most comfortable with.
