Brake question

Anyone experience this?

I have a "11" Tacoma, 5 speed, 4 cyl. It has 15K on it in 6 months, 90% highway miles.

At times when coming to a stop during the final seconds I hear a squeal, like they are worn out. This does not happen everytime and has happened in both wet and dry conditions. Appears to be coming from the front, but we know how sounds can be deceiving.

They are not worn, neither are they glazed over....of course it wouldn't do it for the dealer.

I am a gentle driver, typically I will go 60 to 70K on a new vehicles front brakes even w/an auto, needless to say w/a stick I am on the brakes even less.

Any ideas?

 

Well I'm kind of glad to see that nobody else has this issue, but kind of disapointed cause I'm out of ammo to fight w/the dealer. It just won't make the noise when it's there.

 

I see you are in the northeast... if they use road salt in your area, you will want to get it off, it can cause them to squeak. I would take a hose and spray them off. That has fixed mine from squeaking in the past. Dust can also cause it. Hopefully that will fix it.

 

Has it been doing this since the day you bought it?

Perhaps the brakes are still 'breaking in' (per say).

Drive in reverse and do some braking. Or....try doing some POWER Braking - hit the brakes harder a few times....

Keep in contact with your dealer about the issue. If there is a problem, it'll eventually get worse...and you want this to be under warrantee.

 

Google brake squeal and you'll find lots of stuff. Just try to isolate the one(s) that are making the noise and disassemble and apply a fix. Like grease, shim, etc. And avoid anything that is applied to the rotor or pad surface.

 

Mine squeels every so often in the mornings. Once they've been used a couple times, it goes away. Also happens to me a lot after a wash.

 

Mine do it. Been doing it for a long time even with thick pads still on.

Mornings too, backing out of the driveway, they squeal a lot.

 

Ditto for me -- my '06 usually whines a bit in the morning when I back out of the drive and has done so since it was new; it's more noticeable when it's wet (like it is today).

 

Yea, I occasionally get the brake squeal going lower speeds. Oh well, what can you do its a truck.

 

Very common, but not spoken about much on here for some reason. Seems everyone has been doing it from new. I've been playing around with some anti-seize + anti-squeal on mine. It rains a lot here, and I haven't had it squeal since I serviced them last. Even after a salty winter. The contact points aren't properly lubricated from the factory, just well enough for them not to seize, and not quite enough to keep them from squealing. Ask them to service your front brakes. Should cost you $50-$70 depending on dealer.

Anyone ever chamferred the pads? Had it done on my squeaky Corolla and the squeaking stopped.

 

The pads are already chamfered on the trailing and following ends. Don't want to do it too much, otherwise brake performance and rotor wear will be a factor.

 

thx for the replys...I'll address them in order.

1.Road salt, they use calcium chloride here now, (nasty stuff) I rinse the vehicle every couple of days. BUT it has been a mild winter w/very little snow and icy conditions.

2.Not since new started about 12k (has 15K now) even tho I am easy and downshift a lot I have tried hard braking a couple of times and drove in reverse and tried also to no avail.

3.There is no regularity to this sometimes wet, sometimes dry....can occur from the first time they are applied OR after driving 75 miles on the MassPike. Just not everytime.

4. Being a truck is not an acceptable excuse..I am 53 years old and have owned all types of trucks....acceptable brake noise is when they are worn out and need replacing.

5. I'll ask the dealer about servicing them by lubricating the contact points..as to the $50 to $70 charge, I don't think so. It's under warranty and shouldn't make any noise.

Brakes are not a warrantable component. They will Machine rotors within first year under certain circumstances. The dealer MAY no charge you out of courtesy, but Toyota will more then likely not cover that under warranty. If the dealer tells you they covered it under warranty, it's more likely just them eating the cost, rather then charging Toyota for it.

 

That's OK, as long as I'm not paying...

Update...I was able to let the dealer hear the noise as I happened to be in Mass and stopped to get fuel right around the corner from the dealer and lo and behold there it was.

Drove right over and as I pulled into the drive up service bay and stopped I asked the advisor to listen....he said wait let's get a tech.

So the tech that inspected them was able to hear it but could not narrow it down to the front or rear (I don't feel so stupid now...lol) so a case was opened and after we 3 discussed it at length I was advised to be more aggressive on the brakes for a few thousand miles. The theory is that it will either get worse or go away..if it remains and becomes constant they will do whatever it takes to correct this.

We all agreed tho that a new truck should NOT make brake noise.

The front brakes on my 2006 squeaked primarily when backing out of the garage in the morning. However, on a few occasions, it did squeak when moving forward with the brakes applies very lightly. The dealer replace the following under TSB-BR005-07 on 3/27/09.

I have 60K on it now and it never squeaks.

 

Why didn't they just try putting some Permatex disc brake quiet on the backs of the pads?

 

There are many types of anti seize/anti squeal. I personally use Never-Seez (sp?) at work. Stuff is great.

 

Never-seez is good for some of the moving parts and contact areas but not the backs of pads. 99% of my Never-Seez use is on threaded parts.

Stop Squeal works good, its a tacky silicon type product that you apply to the backs of the pads. It dampens the vibrations which cause the noise.

 

We're all under the assuption that it is probably the front, but the technician did think that it MAY be coming from the rear.

We will see.....
