If you have an autozone near you you should take advantage of the 5qt + Mobile1 filter for $30. Its running right now and the special comes around every now and again

I got a question with all of this. Will the world come to an end or will something horrible happen if you switch back and forth? What if you change to syn and then a oil change or two later you're a little $hort and put dyno in?

I think you'd be fine doing that. The computer in the truck should recognize any changes in engine performance and do what it needs to to keep things safe.

I'm gonna throw in my .02 so here goes. I use to believe in full synthetics and used them religously for about 20 years. I mostly used Mobil I but also tried Amszoil until one of my lifters froze up in my Jeep at 32K miles, but thats another story.

For me personally, I haven't had much luck. Three different vehicles. A 1990 tacoma w22R engine, a 1993 Ford escort, a 2000 Nissan Frontier, and a 1983 Jeep CJ7. All bought brand new and switched to synthetics at first oil change. What happened to all of those was in my opinion, premature oil leaks. Every one leaked enough to stain the driveway between 100-135K miles. I think the oil worked so good that it slipped on right past the seals. who knows. rear main seal and valve cover seals were main culprits except for the Taco. That one was front main seal.

I don't know, maybe just bad luck, but I now only use synthetic blends. Time will tell. With the exception of my air-cooled Harley which needs it for temp. reduction.

As far as you guys wondering about oil change frequency, it really depends on driving style. Besides extreme temperatures, moisture is your biggest threat no matter what kind of oil you use. It takes an engine ( on average) thirty minutes to burn off all the condensation inside. So for you guys that take shorter trips or do a lot of traffic idling or drive in extreme temp. areas, change at 3000. If more highway miles incur, go longer. But you should never go more than six months between changes because you will never be able to always burn off all moisture all the time. Like I said, its just my .02. Take it for what it is. :spy:

by 100K mile i dont care what oil u use if u have a leak that is not premature. 60k and leaking i will agree but between 100-135k and u get a leak thats just the way it is. seals dont last forever u know.

I disagree. I've seen too many vehicles go beyond 150K miles that didn't spill their fluids on the ground. I'll stick to my opinion that synthetic oil will leak sooner on MY vehicles than others oils will. When I add up all the money I spent on synthetics over the years, I think it was money literally dropped on the ground. I still use synthetic blends but at only half the price.

Btw, if you think that forever and 150K miles are the same thing, then you must be that little old lady from Pasodena that I've heard about.

None currently, but I would like a better sounding exhaust and perhaps a cold air pack and some color coded step bars
bmkshort, at what miles did you switch to syn on those that leaked?
I have to say, it looks like 90% of people in these thread who use syn's are changing over at very low miles.

All were switched right after 1000 mile break-in except for the Escort. I remember that one at around 5000 miles. This was my personal experience and it just may be one of those unexplained things but I won't go back to full synthetic again except on my Harley, and thats because of it being an air cooled engine. The synthetic Harley oil seems to lower my temps by 20 deg.

If I lived up north where it gets colder or further down south where it gets hotter then I can see the benefits of full synthetic for its better flow rate at below freezing temps and its lower viscosity breakdown when its consistantly in the mid-nineties or higher, but our weather doesn't stay at extremes for any length of time.

I still think that changing dino oil at 3K miles versus synthetic oil at say 5K miles is a wash. But for peace of mind, I can see where some people think that their synthetic fed motors will last longer. For me, I will stick with the blends and see what time will tell. My 2002 F150 is the first of my vehicles to go on the synth-blend diet and so far so good. Everything is bone dry. But, I only have a little over 73K miles, so we'll see.

^IMO, the larger issue is that you're buying Fords. I had more problems with them than any other brand I've owned (Toyota, Nissan, Chevy, Mitsu). This is coming from a former Ford loyalist who's owned 9 Ford vehicles, starting with an '89 Escort GT (probably the most pathetic vehicle to ever be adorned with a GT badge).

I do, however, agree that a dino change @ 3K vs. synth @ 5K is pretty much a wash. Generally, if you're changing your oil at regular intervals you should have very few, if any, lubrication related issues.

For the record, the 90 toyota leaked the worst ( biggest driveway stain)with the front main seal leak but it didn't start until around 130K miles. The one that really got me was my 83 jeep that started leaking at around 25K miles and the dealer couldn't ever get it right. The Escort and Nissan both started around 100K miles from the rear main seal. I'm still a Ford fan to a certain degree because my F150 has been so good to me. Like I said, time will tell, although we don't put the miles on our vehicles like we use too. Maybe the bike has something to do with that. :D

The front seal leak was common on 22R series engines with high miles. I had an 83 Celica with 110,000 on it when the seal leaked. I never used synthetic oil in the car, but maybe the previous owner had.

That's why I traded my 84 toy pickup with a 22R in. Other than that and a power steering box I had to replace that little sucker ran and pulled a boat for 12 years. Always used dino oil in it.
