Stranded: Ignition cylinder seems jacked

So I can't turn my key in the ignition much at all. I can move it just barely enough to unlock the steering wheel but that's it.

I can't even get it into the ACC position, not even close.

Has anyone experienced this and is it as simple as having a new cylinder or switch or something replaced?

Had a similar problem... turn the steering wheel as far as you can to the right... hold and try to turn the key, didn't work? Turn to the left and hold... try now... Mine was parked against a tree root and bound up the wheel lock mechanisim.

My brothers 01 had the same issue. He ended up needing a new tumbler I believe.

 

Something similar happened o a buddy of mine. He ended up just needing a new key.

 

My friend's shop is predicting this is the problem.

 

I was wondering about this because my key must be pretty worn out after 14 years.

I'm hoping that's just the issue.

 

If the spare key works, they can pop the cylinder out and have a locksmith repair it: $60

If the spare key doesn't move the tumbler, then they need to drill it out, get a new one and re-key it to match the existing keys: $180

My friend took my old but very clean Chevy S10 from me (I regret it now) and after about a month she told me the key doesn't work. I found the spare and brought it to her and it worked no problem. Ends up the key that I gave her had worn down so bad that it was no where the shape of the spare. Before you get any new tumbler, why don't you try the spare?

 

Shot of WD40 into the cylinder and see what happens.

 

Trying that first thing in the morning before we do anything. I have to in fact. Apparently the cylinder won't come out unless the ignition switch is unlocked.

 

How'd you figure this out?

 

My guess would be that your key chain crap weighs 5 pounds !? Lol

I only insert the single ign. key... No key ring or 5 lbs hanging.
and the ignition has held up fine for 16 years.

Be careful with spraying crap inside the ign. key slot
'cause if that solidifies or gums up...
it's going to make matters even worse.

Needed new one from Toyota plus locksmith install
