Lights, need a new alternator?

So at the moment i have the 4 regular lights(high/low, fog) and have 2 100 Watt off road lights, and 2 100 watt back up lights.

Im planning on adding 2 100 watt bed lights, 2 100 watt spot lights, and maybe 4 rock lights..

I have a duralast gold battery, Am i going to need to upgrade my alternator?

You're talking 1000 watts already plus the rock lights.
That's 71 amps, plus the fuel pump and engine electronics.

That's a lot not only for the stock alternator and regulator, but for the stock wiring harness from the alternator to the fuse box.
Even if you are connecting directly to the battery, you could still be seriously overloading the charging side of the system.


And I'd be looking at upgrading that Duralast to an Optima... but seriously, hit up the audio/video forum, seek out some guys who KNOW THEIR SHIT, and see what they do when running high powered amps.

ALWAYS keep in mind that people Mickey Mouse shit in their electrical system all the time. It's sometimes out of being cheap, but it's usually out of ignorance. Sometimes they get away with it, sometimes they post a thread about how they toasted their wiring harness.

High powered lights are no different than a high powered stereo system.

 

i think id run maybe the high beams, fog, off road, and maybe rocks including my amp and stereo

doubt it, get a optima. i ran 4 150 watt kc lights, 4 12's on 2000 watts, plus high beams all at the same time and never killed an alternator. i melted the stock battery though lol.

 

I actually cleaned up all the wires again.. haha
i know.. going to keep it unless someone decides to give me 14000 and even then itll be a toss up when i have all the lights hooked up, because its going to look bad ass

 

never thought of that, and yeah 200 watts of reverse lights. bought them in a kit from autozone for 20-25 bucks
