Been thinking about all the weight I'm adding to my Tacoma....bigger tires, sliders, etc....

I've been looking for either purchased or DIY (within reason) mods to offset or reduce weight? I know "these are trucks", "they're meant to be heavy", blah blah.....Regardless, any weight reduction mods are very interesting to me. They'll help with handling, braking & fuel efficiency.

So if you got any ideas on either mods I can purchase to replace parts for performance/weight reduction or DIY mods (no "remove your bed" type responses please) around the truck that help to shed weight, please post them up.

Examle: Been wanting to do these pulleys, but they only had them listed for XR's. Then I noticed Roxspin was running them:

    NST LW Pulleys

Replace the stock unit & factory cats with these....and some DTLT over the factory cast manifolds
    [IMG]

Paired with a trunk relocation kit
    [IMG]

    Waiting for a 2012 version
    [IMG]

2 piece brake rotors like these....except compatible with the stock calipers
    [IMG]

Made for XR's, but a reduction from 74lbs to 19lbs over the stock leafs....
    XII Composite leafs

Not sure these would even offer a weight reduction....threw a couple into my buddies Supra. They kick arse!

I've seen people do lighter hoods. Other than that you're goona get the ol strip things out answers. I dunno if they make lighter seats for tacos but I'm sure you could strap something in there ha I4 swap?

Rip out your tow hitch and rear bumper and replace with Relentless rear. It's lighter.

    Then paint it white!

Great input guys. Good start to this thread....Hmmm never considered pulling that sway bar, but that might actually work since I don't plan on cornering fast with this truck.

Have been really thinking about having MCM work on a CF hood for me....that's gonna be big $$$ though. I have plans for the stock seats, but maybe I can supplant them and jump a few steps by buying some Cobra Misano's or something. Starting to sound like my Vette build LOL

Wonder if it's lighter than the stock bumper? Looks hella good that's for sure. I'll follow you on this one.

Imo the truck rides way better w/o the sway bar on. Not to mention better articulation! I was shocked how heavy it was! And as long as your not acting like a racecar driver you'll be good!

the.sight.picture - :D Good thinking on the duct tape! LOL

IGO4LOW - I'll give it a shot when I install the lift....hopefully this coming weekend. Thanks bro. These wheels kick butt and did shave 5-7 lbs each.....even though the tires quickly ate that up and then some.

Maybe a lightweight battery like the Odyssey would be another good reduction. I'll relocate it to the storage bin in the back....Hmmm

if your not really planning on cornering with the truck, there isn't much reason to be this anal about weight reduction.

alot of stuff on this truck is already plastics and composites, so it's already pretty light.

CF hood would help a little. fiberglass or some type of composite fenders would be a bit lighter as well.

you could remove all the tools, jack, spare tire as well, but that messes with the weight distribution.

and honestly, all those pulleys won't save a more than a pound. theyre designed to put less strain on your engine, not save weight directly.

all in all there won't be much difference at all. especially on a double cab with giant tires.'

or you could just go full racecar status; gut the interior, lexan windows, fuel cell, lithium battery etc.

LOL, naw this is my daily.

Kelson - While the pulley's alone won't drop a significant amount it's rare when you're going to find a single part that does the brunt of the job you're looking to get done with WR. Having built race cars for quite some time, I am interested in the cumulative benefit of dropping a few pounds here and there. I'd love to drop unsprung weight, but it'll be futile with the tires I'm running (E-Duratrac's). Cornering is hardly the only benefit of a weight reduction program. Braking, mileage, acceleration are all affected. I have little interest in acceleration (that's what my Vette's and Viper are for), but the braking and mileage improvements would warrant me spending a little coin in that direction, provided I can drop a decent amount of weight with the mods I pick.

Obviously there are going to be give & take mods here and there. What I want to minimize is just constantly adding weight with my mods. Where I can spend a few bucks and drop some weight (if only to offset the added weight of the tires, sliders, etc) I'm down.

    With a trunk relocation kit....

dump the exhaust right after the muffler. Louder, slightly better flow, lighter.

    i still vote racecar...lol

i get where your coming from. if your willing to drop the cash on the pulley's they will help; they just don't come cheap. it's just since, well, it's a heavy truck, there isn't much of a market for weight reduction parts.

battery relocation would help with the whole taco lean issue if you have it, I've been thinking about replacing my battery with an oddesy, and moving it aft of the fusebox so there's a little less weight in front of the axle. not much help but i'm anal like that lol. that's if it fits, anyway. I don't want to put it in the bed.

good luck though. i've been constantly looking at ways to lower the weight on my truck, since, well it's hella slow so anything i can get will help lol.
