Hello fellow NJ citizens. I am going to ask the age old question, which to get. I have been trolling this site for about a year now, trying to figure out what kind of experiences other people have had with their choices. Pre-runner v. 2.7 v. Double cab.
    I have a Toyota Sienna
    I commute 12 miles 6 days a week
I want a truck to do yard work and get me to off road parking lots
I am married with a 2 ye old and one on the way
I live in Sussex county hills
I have never owned manual, good first stick vehicle?
A long bed is a must

I am confused what to get because my buddies all own 1970 ford f150s 4x2.
Not my style but they insist on bare minimum trucks for cheap maintenance and practicality. They insist on full size to transport ply wood/sheet rock flat in the bed. They insist you don't need 4x4.
I can see not needing 4x4 but then I would at least want a pre runner.

If I had to have the answer to one question I suppose I would ask, double cab long bed pre runner vs. Regular cab 4x4. This is the best place to ask since some of you live in the same area.
Anyone else regretting the v6 with the constant increase in gas prices?

Sorry for asking the most obvious questions. I promise to contribute to the forum when I am in the new truck. I am big time into mountain and road biking and plan on taking lots of pictures. I already know I want winch, kc driving lights, soft topper and heated mirrors.

Bilstein 5100's on all four with some OME 885x's. Brute Force Fab front bumper. Warn winch. Koenig countersteers wrapped with duratracs.
id go with a double cab long bed 4x4 (since the LB is a must)

IMO there is really no point in having a truck with out 4wd...its a truck, and if you "contribute" to the forum..you will be hanging out with us and wheeling = you will want a 4x4 haha

plus with the double cab...gives you plenty of room for the family. I have a dbl cab shortbed and got it for the reason being...in however many years when i still have the truck...i COULD potentially fit kids back there no problem.

Gas prices...owell...you dont have a far commute so i wouldnt worry about it too much.

maintenance hasnt been an issue on my tacoma yet...oil changes and im good to go...had one problem recently (2 weeks ago) with the crank seal going bad and leaking but it was replaced in a day under warranty. If you are not doing anything crazy with it (lifting it and wheelin the piss outta it) i think you will be fine.

my vote would be a dbl cab v6 long bed...you wont regret having 4wd when u need it but when you need 4wd and you only have 2wd...you'll regret it.

hope that helps some....im sure the rest of the guys will chime in who are much more knowledgeable

Just tint and ppl for now.
    Pudge,
Welcome. You certainly should get the double cab. I have two kids and my DC works well. I would also get the V6 if you aren't worried about the MPG's.

I also ride mountain and road a lot as well. I have been commuting to work on my road bike lately which has been great. We should set up a ride.

If you just want a basic, reasonably priced lift, go with bilstein 5100s or Ome shocks and an add a leaf. Call downsouth motorsports and they will sell you the right stuff for what you want.

The only thing more useless than a 2 wheel drive truck is an unloaded gun.

Get 4x4. Even if you don't plan on going offroading, when you get a snowstorm and end up getting stuck in 2wd you can just flip it to 4wd.

I have a dc lb trd sport. Got 18-19 mpg stock which I think is great gas mileage for a truck. Now with a lot of extra weight and tires I'm down to about 15 mpg.

Especially if you already think you want a winch.. No point in getting a 2wd truck. And if you want to be able to fit more than you and 1 other person no point getting a regular cab.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Does a full sheet fit between the wheel wells? I used to leave the tailgate up on my first gen and just snag two cheap 2x4's. I'd lay the 2x's on the tailgate and the full sheets on that.

    No.

You would need (2) 2x4's laying across the bed or just slide the 4x8 to one side like I used to before the tire rack got into the way.

    Yep.

That's exactly what I meant...

They are a goofy size though. Need to rip down a 2"x8" to make them fit good without moving back and forth.

Thanks for the advice guys. I do want a dbl cab lb. Always have. But a 4 cylinder 4x4 reg cab would be fun and it is more affordable and i have a sienna. My wife prefers the dbl cab as well. I was just trying to be fiscally responsible. Oh well. Probably get one next fall. I like waiting for the next model year. Its exciting.

I'm in Sussex county, by lake hopatcong, so if ya need to see a dblcb , I can show ya.

    This true

4 cy will be no good if you ever try to haul anything, get a ford escape type vehicle if u only want truck for hauling purposes. They get better mileage, cost less, and with seat down in back can fit quite a bit. They are awd and handle pretty well, and can haul a family with dry storage. I drive a six speed as well.

That's not terrible. Hopefully you're not doing that on the flats. :D

I ride a lot of ringwood state forest if you want to do woods as well. Josh here will hit the trail as well.

Thinking about getting this rack from a guy on cl it wont be worth a special trip. I would prolly come up that way when i have something else to get or have it passed off to another twer until it gets closer.
