Alright guys I have a question.. Okay, so how exactly would a pedal drive system (Hobie, etc.) go through a small rapid or shallow section without ripping off the rudders? I'm in the market for a fishing kayak and one of the creeks I will be fishing has quite a few rapids and I really like the pedal drive for the convenience of fishing easier but don't wanna break the thing. I'm sure they probably fold up and I just don't know it..

Yes they fold up but they are not countersunk into the hull of the kayak meaning they still hang out a bit...If you got into some real gnar you could rip them off.

Heck if that's the best deal then go for it. In Tennessee I wouldn't buy it, there are better deals everywhere and on craigslist. My brother in law has a Pelican canoe and it's effing bulletproof. Let me wrangle up some pics....

    Here they are:

My friend and I flipped our canoe in December about 5 years ago at about 10 pm...There's alot to that story but it's beside the point.

Then my brother in law and I went back the next day to conduct a salvage operation. Here we are dragging it the 1/2 mile to my truck
    [IMG]
Ended up getting out and it popped nearly back into shape. Put a new galvanized pipe in for a spine and it's done probably another 100 river miles since then.

Ok, thanks JaSkynyrd. Not sure what to do now. There isn't anything on the local classifieds and $400 will get me something like this which is another Pelican with less features and no accessories it appears.

    http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/5/SportsRec/Marine/KayaksCanoesPedalBoats/PRD~0798279P/Pelican+Sit-In+Kayak.jsp?locale=en

Any other better brand entry level kayaks are $500+ without paddles, skirt etc which is out of the budget anyway. I guess it comes down to if I want to settle for the Pelican or wait and hope something nicer will show up in the classifieds.

I am looking for a kayak for fishing, preferably something used.

Someone has a Prowler Trident Angler 13 footer on CL right now for $750.

It as rod pod storage, large bow hatch, comfort plus seat, 2 flush mounted rod holders, adjustable foot braces, battery bag in bow, Lowrance Mark 5X fishfinder, Cabelas rechargable battery, and Werner Cypres 100% carbon paddle

    Any thoughts on this setup?

You have to have a local kayak club or maybe a national club with members in your area and I bet they are on the web. Keep looking. Think out of the box. Deals are just waiting to be found. You can get a used yak at more then 1/2 the initial cost if you find a motivated seller.

I picked up a 12 yo Wilderness Manteo last week for a friend very cheap and it's in great shape and a good yak. When we got to the guys house he had about 20k in yak gear for sale. His 2 car garage was full of floor to ceiling racks with yaks on all of them. His backyard was also full.

Got my TracRac on today. Ended up cutting it down so I can still park in one garage in the city so they don't get ripped off by trees + it looks much better. Plenty of room for 2 yaks laying down or three on their sides.

    It was packaged great
