Calling your dealer won't get you anywhere. Wait for your letter.

Yep. I called. The guy wasn't even aware that it was extended so when he tried to look it up, his computer was going reaaalllly slowww. So he said to wait for the letter. I looked it up on my account and it's not even there yet.

    From the 2nd link:

The TSB number is “T-SB-0057-12.” Like most TSB’s the repair is covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty, 36 months or 36,000 miles whichever occurs first

Is this a recall or a TSB? I would think it would be a recall due to what is involved.

I asked him that. He said it is indeed a recall and the TSB for it is for techs to know how to fix it.

The TSB only applies to vehicles that have the airbag light on with the Open in Squib d code. Also only applies to vehicles still within warranty. Campaigns come out in phases, as to not overwhelm with parts demand. They will start with 05's and work their way up. Yours will not be in the system until your letter has been sent.

Any questions regarding campaigns or anything else Toyota, feel free to PM me.

According to Toyota, there is a noise that accompanies the issue and can be deteced by drivers.

Anyone's steering wheels making noise? Mine doesn't.

The repair consists of replacing the steering shaft with a newly designed model. Essentially, the old the shaft is removed and replaced with this new part.

First it was the spiral cable assembly now its the steering wheel shaft. Hmm. So if the noise occurs in-warranty they replace both and align the truck too or do they just replace the spiral cable for out-of-warranty trucks?

If it's a known design flaw then why is the repair limited to only within-warranty vehicles?

Wait for your letter. To be blatantly honest, there is nothing more annoying then someone calling in because they saw on a forum or the news that there is going to be a campaign on their vehicle. Dealer's can't do anything until Toyota says so, and until the campaign pops up in the system for your vehicle.

I work in the Service department of a Toyota dealership. Most Toyota recalls pay pretty decent even at warranty rates. Cha f-ing ching. More money for me. Bring on the recalls !

Whoops. Now I sort of feel bad for calling. :( But then again he said he was not aware of it being extended. I think the announcement came out today?

Scott, do you know if it's ALL vehicles or certain ones made at certain plants or .... ??

It's all good. Just an FYI. Generally, the news and forums will find out before it is announced to us at the dealer, hence why your dealer was unaware.

I am fairly (not 100%) certain that the spiral cable for all tacoma models is made at one plant, as the part number is no different. In this case, no matter where your truck was assembled, will have the same part, and therefore have the recall.

Okay thanks for the info. I'll wait for the notice. But since they are starting at 05 and I'm a 10, is it possible that it will come to me BEFORE the warranty expires?

When a campaign comes out, it doesn't matter when your warranty is. On a voluntary recall, they will usually put an expiry date on it. For example, if everyone got their letters by Jan. 2013, the expiry might be Jan 2015, regardless of warranty. The only way to get your spiral cable replaced before your letter is up, is for the SRS light to come on, for that code to appear, AND to still be under warranty. Chances are, it will not happen before warranty is up.

Okay so as long as I wait for the letter and then bring it in promptly, I should be good, right?

I guess I was concerned because there was a person here who got the letter about the frame rust recall thing and when he called, the appt was not for a while. By the time it was considered a bad frame, he was turned down because it passed the date according to the year of vehicle. Meaning, his truck was under the recall but was it xxx amount of years beyond model year and his had surpassed that by a month or so. And he said the letter was received only a few weeks prior.

Fairly certain that recall doesn't expire until Oct 2012 or 2013... I'll double check on that tomorrow. You should have no issues, the expiry won't be for a few years. You'll get your letter (or it will appear in the system) before then. If you take your truck to the dealer every six months or less, it may pop up when you get your service before you even get your letter.

Scott, thank you for your expertise and time and for helping educate us on this. I feel better now. As I'm sure others might too. :)
