U-joint clip

I changed my u-joint last month and today after washing the undercarriage of my truck I noticed the 3 of the 4 clips aren't seated properly. Should I be concerned ? The crack at the top of the driveshaft is superficial, more like a scrape.

It looks like you mauled the channel when you removed the cap. Try to fix it, if not it might need replacement.

 

Cap's not deep enough you may have a roller that fell out between the yoke and the cap if that's the case it will soon fail. Better try it again.

I Dont think you should drive like that. From the picture it looks like your yoke on the shaft is cracked. If thats true then this thing will fall appart when you driving potentially killing you or somebody else on the road.

Like I pointed out in my first post, it's not a crack. I am going to take it to a driveshaft shop in the morning and hear what they have to say. I think the caps aren't seated properly.

 

Looks like crack.. also you have chunks missing from the other side. This will not hold bearing cap.
Plus it looks like whole thing is bended out of shape. probably Thats why clip does not fit anymore.

WTF? that shaft is f^cked with the hammer blows on that yoke.

Go find another driveshaft out of a wreck and someone else to do the maintenance on it. Hammer, screwdriver and a rag method works on 70 year old tractors not modern autos.

 

Well I changed the whole shaft, got an '07 from a salvage yard. Won't be letting those guys near my driveshaft again, they usually carry it to a machine shop to press in the u-joints (as the other two) but this time it's like they tried to do it themselves with the wrong tools.

 

a vice and a socket work usualy pretty well. why would someone hammer the shit out of them?

When Workman did not have access to a vice, he used the hammer and flathead screwdriver method multiple times on his 79 F150. You can take a flathead screwdriver and place it on the inside edge of one of the U joint caps inside the drive shaft yolk. Then you can pound the shit out of it, with the clip taken out, and with a little effort get the cap to slide out of the yolk. Then pound the shit out of the opposite cap, and the U joint will come out. This is most likely how the OP got his u joint out. WD or PB blaster helps a lot with this BTW.

Workman would never do this to his Tacoma's drive shaft, as He believes it is made of aluminum??? Pounding the shit out of it would break or bend the aluminum pretty easily, and Workman hates to pound shit if its gonna break. Pretty old school technique that works but in today's world it has obvious consequences, as seen from the above photos....even on Workman's old 79 it wasn't the best method. But that truck was a 4x4 BEAST and only cost $1500, much less than His Tacoma It would go more places 4x4 too, with its 390/C6/NP 205/ Dana 44 front and Ford 9in rear, Workman loved this truck. He hated 7 MPG around town.

 

I wouldn't drive a truck with a broken drive shaft yolk, even a slight crack. I had a friend in high school who banged out a u joint out with the ol hammer and screwdriver trick and must have broken the yolk on the drive shaft just a tad....

The front drive shaft yolk broke when he was hauling ass down a dirt road, maybe 40-50MPH, caught on the road, and flipped his truck basically ass over front seriously injuring two passengers. He was lucky to come out unharmed. Both people survived but it was VERY shitty.

Looks like a monkey with a hammer had his way with this shaft. Its pretty much fuked. You should have a drive line shop weld a new yoke on that and rebalance it.
