Based on my experience, I've done both the entry 'gps 101' and intermediate 'gps 201' classes at the local store
gps 101 is more or less a sales pitch telling you what gps to buy. since you already have one i think you could skip this
gps 201 is usually tailored to specific units. it helps if you know a little about the gps you have and can ask specific questions. we wondered around the parking lot and had to set 'waypoints' along our 'trail'

and if all else fails just bring it into the store and ask one of the people at the gps counter/sales area for help. They're more than willing to help (even if you didn't buy it there)!

In the 201 class, do they teach you to build routes? It's an incredibly useful tool for that. I've been using Garmin Basecamp to do that. Works with Google Earth too. Pretty cool.

REI is a Co-op. You buy a membership which gets you a percentage of your purchases back at the end of the fiscal year. It's somewhere between 8-10 percent depending on what you buy. www.rei.com for more details.

We set waypoints and then had to retrace our steps by going back to each of those points. Hard to get lost in a parking lot though

You buy a membership - $20, one time - and then you get 10% back on regular price store purchases. then once a year you get a voucher for that 10% thats accumulated for the year. and if you have the REI Visa card you get even more back.

Ha ha. Yes. It is hard to get lost in the lot.

Garmin Basecamp is free. You can buy topo maps for it (and your GPS) which make it really useful. It's still the Garmin User Interface which sucks though it's still worth downloading. There are PC and Mac versions available.

Here's a pic of my two year old helping me pack our new Snow Peak gear into the Pelican case I bought of it all - thanks to TacoDoc for the idea - which hopefully means lots of delicious eats out in the woods for us. Now to take it all out and get the stickers and extremely well written instruction tags printed entirely in Japanese off and wash them up to be ready to go.

well i tore my rei flash back pack. i was bummed but then i remembered that being a rei member i could just take it in and they would replace it. well turns out that they remodeled the flash line of backpacks. i like all of there improvements but the color is absolutely hideous. im actually pretty dissapointed. why does all the ultralight gear have to be ugly bright colors. i just want a tan or OD pack.

Ive noticed that. I absolutely HATE all the stupid colors. I prefer less "crazy" colors myself. Black, tan, dark blue, or dark red is about all I like. My ass doesn't want lime green or yellow and all that crap.

I like the bright colors....better chance that you will be more visible to other hikers, hunters, etc. And if you were ever in a situation that a search party was looking for you you're going to want to stand out from the environment.

Just went shopping for a pack to help spend my 20% and some gift cards.

The Gregory Baltoro 75 did not fit properly, but the REI Crestrail 70 is looking, and feeling, promising. Going to try the Osprey Aether 70 too, but they did not have it in my size.

I tried REI, Gregory and Osprey and finally settled on an Osprey pack. They all fit a little differently and each company seems to cater to a specific body type. I have a long torso and the hip belts of the Osprey felt the most comfortable to me. Don't be afraid to wander around the store with each of the packs loaded down.

Jeanne had real trouble getting a pack that works with her hips a few years ago, and ended up the with an Osprey. Short torso, long legs.

Oh, jah, I loaded up the packs with 40 lbs in the store and walked around for 10-15 minutes. The Gregory shoulder straps are heavily molded and dug into my pecs, and the hip belt was also a little funky. We swapped in medium shoulder straps but that did not do it. The REI Crestrail was more comfy all around, and more stable. I am borderline medium, so I'll have to mess around with swapping various straps as possible. I heard the basic Osprey waistbelt was pretty flimsy for heavy loads and should be upgraded to the bio fit belt, which is only like $10 more.
