4.0 Gas Mileage

I always average 16-17.5. DC4x4 But I think the cap I have on affects it. Once summer gets here I'm going to run some without it and see if it improves.

My cap is about 6" taller than the cab.

 

No, I wouldn't really call it complaining, just a little disappointed. I was getting close to that with my Z71, and could get better than that if I was on a long trip and used the cruise.

I know I can do better if I will just work on my driving habits. Slow take offs, stay close to the speed limits, etc. I'm really enjoying the truck, I think I'll have it for a long time.

 

Well, I checked the second tank and got 17.8 mpg. I've been going back and forth to work, with lots more stops/starts, so I guess that's not too bad. I did slow down a bit and use my cruise control on the portion of my drive that's on the highway.

 

I came back from Canada towing my camper @ 75+ and got about 9 MPG! I have done as well as just shy of 22 so give it some time and lift your right foot and get into the highest gear as soon as you can.

 

I got 19.1mpg last week with my TRD Off Road DCSB.........cruising @ 65mph on highway and keeping it under 2k rpm's

 

I know this was true in my '05, and I'm going to try it on the new '12... but not before she's good and broken in. I know that makes a difference.

Premium fuel. I know in my '05 if I didn't run 91 octane (or better, used to have 93 where I lived), not only would she fall on her face, but I suffered upwards of 5mpg. Supposedly the newer generation 4.0L can run 87 octane just fine, but it's worth trying.

No mileage readings yet, as I haven't broken but 600 miles.

*Edit* - a 5mpg LOSS that is.

 

I am averaging 17 mpg, I do about 60 mph I try to keep it on cruise control as I do approximately 2/3rds of my trip to work is on the highway.

I have a double cab 4x4 TRD sport 6 cylinder manual transmission. I do try to keep my RPMs around 2K.

I have a big trip to Canada at the end of the week, and I just got the truck tuned up, so I am curious to see what the gas milage will be on a long highway trip.

I am most certainly going to seem like the odd man out but I seriously get about 18-19 around town and on long road trips I have gotten as good as 24mpg. These aren't guesses either. I am extremely meticulous about resetting and checking every single tank (I keep a mini calculator in my console for this very purpose). Here are my stats:

1) '06 4x4 DCab, 90K miles
2) No lift, stock tires, stock eveything
3) I use Premium (that's what the directions say)

Now, a HUGE difference is the fact that I never stomp on my pedal. Everything is eased into. I work with some sharp engineers and when the last gas spike hit ($4+ a gallon) one guy gave me a bunch of tips to economize. The biggest one is to ease into and out of the gears.

I will admit, in order to get the 24 hwy mpg it was literally nothing but hwy without a single stop. Meaning, I drove 300 miles w/o a single stop at 65mph the entirety of the drive on cruise control. Keeping RPMs low is critical. Again, 24mpg is rare but possible.

 

78 MPH will kill your mileage

i get 19-20 on the highway on road trips, but rarely go over 72

around town which is most of my driving i get 14 in the winter and 16 in the summer

 

I gotten 150 miles on a full tank before. Stayed in boost as much as i could that time. Had just tuned the turbo kit. Needless to say, that got expensive really quickly. Lol

 

Well, I took a little road trip over to Mississippi to go turkey hunting this week, and I got 21.5 mpg on the trip over. I tried to keep the rpm's around 2k or less and eased into my takeoffs. Killed 3 turkeys too

 

4.0 2WD 18.5 to 20.5 depending on speed. Avg 70 mph hwy.

So after reading the other posts, I spent a week of driving while trying to keep the RPMs below 2K, and between the city driving and highway driving i got 18.2 MPG...then I took a ride to Canada, driving an average of 70 MPH, all highway and got 19.1 MPG.

 

Since the weather has warmed up a bit, mileage has gone up. Last fill up I was getting 19 with 35% city 65% highway. On the highway I keep it a shade under 70. Pretty sure I'm getting 20 on the interstates at that speed.

That's very similar to what I'm getting. I'm headed to Alabama turkey hunting this week, so I'll get a chance to see what it'll do on a long road trip. I'll be driving fairly slow because I'll be following a buddy pulling a travel trailer. I'm hoping for 22-23 with cruise on 65, mostly flat ground too, so that should help.

 

OP if it makes you feel any better, I'm getting about 16mpg's with mixed driving (1092mi on the clock) and while it will break it and hopefully get better, I am actively looking for solutions to improve this. That, and I drive like a nut. LOL

Check out NST pulleys, and anything else that will reduce your rotating mass/weight. I personally am planning on going with the URD TCAI, NST pulleys, URD Aftercat, and the MAF cal.....even though we have trucks, and they're not supposed to get good mileage, and they're not fast, blah, blah, blah....The same rules apply to any combustion engine. More air in/out, more efficiently is good.

 

I have made huge weight reductions to my truck. When I am running completely N/A, I run about 19- 22 MPG. Tire pressure and width also play a significant roll in friction, thus loss of MPG. So keep that in mind.

My truck weighs about 3750.
