I've been off for a year due to hernia surgery, and I've been aching to ride Stumpy. Got him two years ago, and last year I had to move him to another part of the basement so I'd stop being sad walking into my office and seeing him every day.

    Amen!

So a buddy of mine (total newb) is looking for a hardtail and wanting to spend $500. He was convinced to go with a Trek or Giant with mech discs, heavy nearly worthless fork and Altus/Alivio groupo. These are amazing bikes for entry level and for someone who is coming from Wallyworld bikes.....so I stumbled across a Sette Reken on Pricepoint.com (we have no local shop) for $599 (claimed msrp $1400) with Deore groupo, Avid Elixir3 hydros, Mavic rims, and probably slightly better RockShox fork. To me this seems like a no brainer even with a relatively blah no-name frame this is great bang for buck and 28 pounds. He finally agreed and ordered one tonight.
Take a look y'all and see what you think.?.?.?
Do you agree it's a good call?

Agreed if it fits him its good.

Although it is really a 'no-name' brand, the frame has really good reviews. I might end up buying that exact kits you just talked about soon.

    Here is a review.

This is the one you are talking about right?

Thanks for the reassuring replies guys and thanks to AJ for the review link. I had looked and hadn't found one so that is much appreciated.

No problem, as I said, I am also intersted in this bike. So the fact that I know someone who bought it is reassuring to me. Let us know how he likes it!

It was kind of hard to find it when I looked. But ya gotta do what ya gotta do:rolleyes:
    Glad I could help!

Hey also AJ Pricepoint lists a Reken frame only that is matte black (or appears as such) so Brad was gonna try to talk them into swapping the red for the black. I think he was willing to even pay a lil extra.

I'm a big fan of Sette and Pricepoint, and the bike rags always have good things to say about Sette. The Trek or Giant is a good choice to upgrade later. The Sette is a good choice to upgrade as parts break. IMO, if you're serious about riding, you don't go below Deore/LX. That and the fact it's nine speed. To me, it's a little on the heavy side, but I have a feeling the Dart fork has a lot to do with that. I wasn't able to find the specs on the Dart, but it's a decent entry level fork. The Wellgo pedals are heavy too. But I think it's a great entry level bike that can feasibly be upgraded vs replaced once your buddy realizes how awesome riding is. And I like the Elixirs too.
