I was an instructor/ Platoon Sergeant in Delta Company 1/507abn during that class, and ran the DZ. Her name was PFC Megan Adelman from Columbus Ohio! You are correct, she had a cigarette roll and didn't pull her reserve because she was unconcious, the investigation revealed that she that flip thru her risers due to a weak exit. We found her died on impact, her spine had been separated from her pelvis and the spine had busted thru the BDU pants between the pockets. It was pretty rough to see, for a while we didn't realize it was a double digit (female designation in Jump School) once someone realized it was a Female the mood grew much different. As Instructors many of us had seen combat deaths having been down range several times, but for my guys in DCO 1/507 this was the first female we'd encountered. Weird I guess, anyway what Platoon were you in brother, I had 1st Platoon Dco 1/507. Never Forget your FALLEN....HURRY UP, AIRBORNE!

 

I went through Airborne in October of 2005 (got our wings on Halloween) and I was in Delta 1st Plt. Sounds like you might have been my platoon sergeant; what a small word.

 

No Brother, that wasn't me. I got promoted and went to Alaska in april, started to stand up 3/509 PIR, 4/25 ABCT. But I probably know who your PSG was, as well as most of the Black Hats.

 

509th huh? I was in the 425th Support Battalion, B. Co (MI) I was one of the UAV guys. Did you deploy OIF 06-07? I was at the launch and recovery Site there on FOB Kalsu.

 

Damn theres a lot of 4/25 guys on here, just goes to show you how small the ABN community really is.

 

Hey brother, yes I did deploy with the brigade. I started 3/509 then took HHC 425 bstb as 1sg, I loved the company but had nothing but trouble with the CSM! Didnt care for commander either. Should never have the Infantry!

 

I need advice. how can i get into airborne? do i request it at basic?

 

Small world. I still keep in touch with quite a few guys from B Co. I think everyone had a problem with the CSM, and it seems most infantry guys have trouble with us POGs. Our training separates us from the beginning and our missions within the Army are simply worlds apart. I think support MOS's would benefit from basic more similar to Sand Hill. Anyways, I'm done rambling. Thanks for you years of service. Hope you are enjoying retirement.

 

I had Airborne in my contract prior to basic. There was a opportunity for a handful of guys in AIT to volunteer for basic, and the drill sergeants essentially ran them through a competition, allowing them to earn one of the few spots. If you can get an assignment to an Airborne unit, then you will have a much better chance of them sending you later down the road. It's all a numbers game and they don't really care to see a LEG walking around in a maroon beret without wings on his/her chest.

 

Having worked at airborne school, I have some insight into that school and how circumstances can really screw people over. As far as joining the army and getting the job or assignment you want, let's put it this way. I can't buy a can of Copenhagen without running into 10 guys a recruiter has fucked over.........GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING ON YOUR CONTRACT. Recruiters are liars, school trained. To those still in the fight, stick it out if you can retirement is pretty good. You all make us very proud.

I spent 3 1/2 years on Ft. Bragg. I departed the Army with 29 jumps. Right before I got out, I had passed the Jump master pre-school. I wasn't allowed to go forward because I failed to re-enlist.

Those worst injury I experienced was a bruise on one of my hips from rolling onto a canteen cup/canteen. I credit my success to strong exits.

Haven't heard anything about the Club, be it seems clear to me that instructors would use the term to comply with policies while still showing their disdain for failure. But you need to understand that they have to fail many people simply because there's max course limit. Eg.. while I was there max size was 420 , in most courses we would encounter 500. In summer courses when the ROTC kids would show it could be over 600. This would require cadre to conduct serious weeding.

 

Hey guys, you can worry someone with all the takl of injury. I plan on getting airborne soon, submitted a Ranger packet last week. I will get Airborne regardless and I can not wait for it.

 

My class was lucky. I got there in April and my once everyone signed in we had like 350 I think, quite a few legitamitally failed the PT test... Dunno how its the easiest thing ever.. But I don't think the Black Hats actually intentionally failed anyone due to the fact our class was so small. Ended up graduating exactly 300 paratroopers though.

 

With the numbers that low the goal would most likely be to graduate everyone, who met the standards.
How do you like Ft Rich, we still want to move back there. Best assignment I had, the jumps were sweet. PT could be brutal, pulling that Damn awkeo (how ever ya spell it) in snow shoes. I sucked at skiing with the issue skis, grab! Walking back from Malemute dz was a Bitch in snowshoes. Beer and halibut was breakfast of champions.

 

Fort Rich was a cool assignment, and I look forward to going back to Anchorage. I think it would be a blast in your day to day life or an extended vacation, but I can't say I truly enjoyed playing Army up there. Soft landings in the snow were great, but hard landings on ice were brutal.

 

I love Fort Rich... I got there back in '10 right as the BDE was redeploying. Especially after being stationed at Drum for 3 years Rich is like heaven lol always something to do around Anchorage.
Malmute ain't that bad of a DZ, except when your close to the end of the chalk and get stuck on the other side of the DZ in the middle of winter thats when it starts to suck lol

 

"Five Jump Chump" here...got'em in 2003 (Delta 1/507) at 33 years old...Advil was my best friend for three weeks! The most fun I had in my 16 years with the Army and Army National Guard.

I get a kick out of all the load masters that see my wings on me AF uni. The just shake their heads and smile.
