Bed lined side steps / nerf bars?

How many of you guys line-x'd, rhino lined, or herculiner'd your side steps or nerfs? I am looking to get some nfabs, but dont want them to rust, debating for the cost to quality ratio, which is better? Which wont make me slip on them when wet, and fall an extra 6 inches (due to lift) to the ground, thus hurting myself, or making me look retarded and/or cussing in front of children that might be present at the time... any input would be great, thanks guys, and gals.

 

Rustoleum spray on bedliner is my favorite. It goes on evenly and dries hard and fast with a rough texture so u wont slip.

Yes. And yes, it is the most durable DIY bedliner - I have used all of them multiple times

 

I was also wondering about this. I planned on using one of the big three (line-x, herculiner, rhino liner) on my nerf bars when I get them too, but I have no idea which I would pick or which would work best. I had the thought that once I did the nerf bars that I might spray/roll it on my fender flares too? idk just a thought..

 

I have been considering doing my factory step rails. Not sure about it sticking to the finish on these though. They are I guess a stainless finish? Can anyone tell me if it would work or not?

 

I did my rear bumper with duplicolor spray on bed liner and couldn't be happier. The stuff is tough and looks good. Easy to spray on and I didn't use primer either. all I did was sand down, wipe down the bumper and spray away. I think I did three costs and it looks like it will last me a while.

I have Raptor black powder coated nerf bars on my tundra that I put on Oct 2011. This winter, even though it was mild, there are spots of rust starting around the pad and end plugs.
There is a 10 yr warranty on the bars but to ship them back is a pain plus
They are used in the Northeast ie salt country so it will just happen again.

Soooo...how do I do this rustoleum prep thing?
Do you use an acetone after scuffing them up?
Do I take the pads off or tape it off seal with like a silicone?
I have read online that some guys spray the inside with like that foam insulation stuff? That seems extreme, that crap expands
How about spraying it inside? (the rustoleum stuff not the goop insulation)
It also makes them less slippery correct?
My black powder coated bars are slippery

Recently got my avid steps line-x'ed (Cost me $175)

 

If you lightly scuff the finish, the bedliner will adhere. You might want to read the can to see if they recommend a primer or adhesion promotor when applying to bare metal. Bedliner can be used to cover stainless steel though.

Remove the end caps and step pads, then remove all surface rust by sanding, it will be quite a bit of sanding. Inside the pipe will be difficult for obvious reasons but a wire brush will allow you to rough up the first 8 - 10 inches anyways. Once your surface rust is removed, scuff up the entire surface for good adhesion. I used regular old rubbing alcohol on a lint-free rag as a final prep stage. You probably could use acetone but I'm not sure what it would do to the powdercoat. You don't want to soften the powdercoat since it will be remaining as a substrate. I used bent up coat hangers and hung my light bar from the ceiling rafters in my basement to paint. Use light, even coats, the paint comes out very fast initially and it can be easy to get runs if you apply too thick.

I covered my light bar with 4 - 5 light coats and sprayed inside the pipe as much as I could. I also used the same prep steps mentioned above as the light bar can powder coated from the factory. 1 winter down so far and the bedliner looks great! I don't use them for stepping but there is a nice texture to the paint, which I'd imagine would be more grippy than powdercoat.

Unfortunately my only local spray place won't spray mine not that I could spend that money. My bars were only $150 because everything rusts here.

Mike, thanks for outlining the process. I like the rubbing alcohol suggestion & hanging them from the rafters. If the warm weather comes back this is what I will do. Appreciate all the help.

 

Same here they've held up great over the winter so far, although this winter was hardly a winter around here...

OP - save your money and don't bother with Herculiner.

 

I covered mine myself from the cans at WalMart. It's RUSTOLEUM Truck Bed Coating. 1.5years now, still good to go, but I will say I don't use them everytime I get in/out of the truck. Here you go, found my original write up:

I would love to get mine line-x'd, or rhino line'd, but it turns out that working for the local government, keeping people safe, and restoring order when there is chaos doesnt pay for shit

Im leaning more towards the rustoleum spray liner. After doing some research, reading reviews and spending some time on their website, it looks like rustoleum stands behind most of their products, and seems to be a well rounded company. I think this is the route im going to go, considering its a spray liner, the cost to quality ratio will be really good.

Thanks for the link, and feedback. Have you put the sand paper stuff on your steps since you coated them? Will it even stick to the coating, or is it not that textured?

looks good man, i love the way the 12's look, and with steps that have been line-x'd, im jelly.....

 

You know, I did not even try. It's not THAT textured like the Line X stuff appears to be. The back of the step pads they come with are really tacky so I would imagine it would hold up well. I honestly don't think you really need them as I get pretty good grip w/o. I will say if I had to put them on , what I would do is measure out where they would go, and then sand down the liner and apply them. That way you get a smooth surface for them.

 

How much was the light bar to Line-X? Mine arrives Monday and I need to make a decision?

 

Finally got around to spraying my Tundra's Raptor series oval nerf bars w/ bed coating / bedliner material.
They were flat black powdercoated & after one mild winter scratched, dull & rusty in spots.
I also broke one of the plastic darts that keeps the step pad in place.
The end caps would not come off either so everything got sanded/roughed up.
After prepping the bars by cleaning & sanding & siliconed the plastic edges.
Used 3M heavy duty double sided tape along with glob of silicone to reattach the end of the step pad.
I sprayed a light coat of Rustoleum's Rust Inhibitor let dry per instructions.
Then used 3 light coats of Rustoleum's Bed Coating Spray.
The light coats ensured no dripping & kept a uniform sandy grippy texture to the bars surface.
I was real happy with how they turned out & like them better than when new.
