No worries, I won't crucify you (pun intended).

Sorry, lame joke. My quick research found that there are no laws that restrict an atheist from holding office, yet laws that can be read as discriminatory. It was really quick research mind you, but it was stated on several atheist sites. I would not doubt for a second that the way some of the wordings are for particular states, they may lean towards wanting religious affiliation, but I don't think any flat out say you must be religious.

Do you know any laws and where they can be found that state this?

Raised as Buddhist, but to me its more of "a way of life". I don't believe there is a God.

Law was a poor word choice. It is in several state constitutions. Did a quick Google of the phrase "states that require religion to hold office" and this was the second choice (picked purely because it was the second choice and it was easy to read)http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friend...ates-ban-atheists-from-holding-public-office/

    there is a huge difference...

religious and other non profit charities get their resources from free will...not taxation.

politicians often use their "charities" as vote buying schemes.

and, as rleeharris posted, the government can no longer manage a garage sale, let alone "charity"

130 million doesn't buy much nowadays, when it comes to building large commercial structures.

especially when one considers the government regulations and mandates. I know this personally.

talk about spending lavishly...politicians & bureaucrats wrote the book.

    agreed

keep it civil...refrain from personal attacks...and respect others beliefs...and this thread could have legs for a while.

I'm not saying that all the new taxation should be used for charity...it should be used to help keep the country afloat as well. It's kinda funny that a lot of the same folks that would harp on gvmt handouts are A-OK with charity handouts. Pots and kettles, right?

understood. if you dislike them...do not support them. simple.

btw, I kinda agree w/ you to a point.

we used to go to a small chapel...some Sunday mornings there would only be 20 folks there, and that included the preacher. We lost that preacher, whom I loved.

so we were "church hopping"...and the mini-mega church we currently attend was last on our list. serious.

but the music kept bringing us back. plus, the pastor is awesome...and that has kept us there. we are not even officially members yet, but may be soon.

btw#2: that little chapel was built in the 1930's when a hurricane destroyed all the churches in the area...folks got together from many religious beliefs and built a small house of worship. to this day, it remains non-denominational.

and yes, they have added on a new modern facility, but not a "mega".

I've been known to still visit that little chapel alone...sit in the pew and pray. When I do, I get to see the large wooden cross I built in my shop, that hangs on the wall behind the modest alter. [I say this not to brag, but it brings me a sense of peace that something I built with my own hands hangs in an 80 year old place of worship]

plus, I've gone there on Sunday evenings before the Hispanic service they have at that little chapel. and I get to see all those smiling brown faces. plus, some of those messican chickas are hotties. (just a little humor to keep the thread real :D )

American government does not have a tax revenue problem...it has a spending problem.

    not exactly.

government entitlements come with a political price. (noted in one of my posts above). and is paid for with a mandate. don't pay your taxes and you WILL go to jail.

private charity comes from peoples free will. NO ONE, forces anyone to give their money or time.

Trying to catch up. Do not have time to dissect every post but will applause John, Bob, and Larry for realizing this is not a debate or argument over who is right or wrong. And I'll refrain from the 3 apostle wise cracks. Good info and topics used in those rebuttals. More questions to come.

Likewise Brad, he has been open to the discussion and not focussed on proving anything or one wrong. It's been fun.

Have you ever heard of a public official being elected (not appointed) that didn't use the religious card?

Definitely, not disputing that it is not used, I'm just not sure that it is required of any state. Like I said before, politicians are elected on their views which include religion rolled into it all. Ultimately they are elected because a "majority" (or at least those who make it to vote) agree with one or all of their views. Whether it be religion or budgetary, but it is not required by law, maybe social law.

Aww shucks... :D ... Thank you! I have enjoyed this too! Even if we don't come to the same conclusion, the discussion can still be fun! You and a few others have earned some rep from this thread in my book
