I've been driving for almost 40 years of New England winters. While you may get better with experience, you never become an expert. You hit an icy patch at a high speed it doesn't matter if you have 4wd or not - you are sliding. You can only pray while you keep from spinning out, nothing gets in your way. That you have zero control over.

Now if you're a real seasoned driver through this kind of weather, then you learn to avoid driving through it or avoid trying to beat it. You won't win.

Can people please read my entire post before commenting on it.

I know he wasn't because as a professional driver with 3 different driving courses under my belt and and a profession that requires me to be on the roads in a giant box on wheels in conditions that make people stay home, I can tell.

If he was in 4HI he'd be spinning all 4 wheels, not just the rear two. That's why 4wd is so good in bad conditions, with all the weight over the engine, and the front and back tires locked together with the drive train, it's really really really hard to make the ass end come out. Second, because you have drive traction with the front tires, it's easier to correct out of a minor slide because the front will pull your ass back into line.

I've been to these accidents, I'm fully aware of how they happen and how they can be avoided.

He lives in Canada and has a 4x4. You live in Alabama and have a 4x2. He knows his shit pretty good. Next question?

You forgot to mention I've run Mud Terrains for the past 2 winters with no accidents or unintentional off road adventures.

Additional - I'm using this far more often...

My Mud Terrains have done well in snow, I don't know why people are so hard on them. :notsure:

I know they're not the best choice, but I haven't had any scary moments with them either.

And you know the correct number of periods in an ellipsis. You my friend...you can stay. :drunk:

Cause they suck on hard packed snow and ice. But if you know that you can drive accordingly. What people don't know is that of all the tires, they're the best in deeper snow because they pull you like a goddamn skidoo. On slushy highways, no issue, those big lugs just grab and throw.
Ideally what I want is a set of Firestone Destination MTs because you can pin them for #17 studs.

Mine have been fine on hard packed snow and ice though. I was going slow as fuck, but they got the job done.

They're such a beast in the deep soft stuff though.

I generally like to press a little harder on the skinny pedal to make the ass wiggle on ice and hard pack. :p

Same here. We had gravel roads that were like concrete slab with marbles on it when dry and slippery as snot when wet. This was the best way to learn through experience, and knowing what decisions to make in what circumstances, without having time to think about it - it becomes instinct - when do you hit the gas and when not, when do you hit the brakes and when not, etc..
Like they say: "good decisions come through experience, experience comes through bad decisions"
