Fan speed switch not working.

My local dealer did the TSB and it doesn't make that annoying low speed noise anymore

 

I have read this post about 50 times and it seems that nobody has the SAME problem that I have......

And it is a cold drive to work!

One clarification I need to ask is when everyone says "fan does not work" does that mean you turn the knob and nothing happens or the air blows but it does not blow hot or cold.

My air blows great, but does not get hot or cold. (Well it is cold now because of outside temp!)

My problem started in Aug 2011 and the a/c only worked (was cold) on fan high. Then i would have to close all of the vents except the one next to the driver to get any cold air at all. Then it just stopped getting cold. Again, the fan blew fine. Just not the right temp.

Fall started and the heat worked maybe 3 or 4 times and now not at all.

Should I start with the connector? Then what? Thanks folks!!

Probably the reason no one mentions the problem you have in this thread is because your fan switch is working. This thread is about the fan switch NOT working.

Having said that, I'm not sure what your issue could be. Sounds like something is affecting the airflow over both the heater core and the A/C evaporator core. That would definitely merit a thread of its own.

I have not read the entire thread, but I had the problem whereas the fan only operated on High. There was heat, but only on high speed fan. This is usually a fan speed resistor part that has failed. It is usually not the switch itself or the fan motor. There is, what else is new, a TSB on this part where they replace not only the resistor but the connector as well. My 2007 Tacoma has 54,000 miles on and I have an extended warranty. It is a $30 part that the dealer replaced (after ordering and waiting a week in 20 degree weather with no heat) in 2 hours. They replace the part and the connectors that overheated and looked burnt. For those without warranty, it is a fairly easy fix to do yourself.

 

Piece of cake - worked like a charm for me (2007 2.7L Prerunner SR5 Access Cab). Mine was working on High only and I thought I had a bad climate control switch on the dash. Was about to take it in for service when I stumbled on this thread. Pulled the plug and it was burned like those in the pics earlier in the thread. All I did was pull the burned wire and lightly sanded the oxidation off of it. I bent the pin slightly so it contact better with the resistor. Plugged it in and it worked first time. (Hopefully it will stay that way!).

...now for the noise with the fan. This thread may have solved TWO of my problems.

 

everyone that has had to do this fix needs to go to the nhtsb website and file a claim against toyota. If enough people do it then a recall may be issued since a frozen windshield with no heat is a safety issue.

About a month ago I heard my fan kick off and then kick off again. Then nothing else happened until about a week ago when I was driving home from work and I had no fan speeds at all. Father researching this thread I pretty much tried everything on here. I pulled the plug and noticed a slight burn mark so I cleaned the points and added dielectric grease. After plugging it back in nothing worked, so I hit the bottom of the fan, which gave me just the high speed back. Today, I tried to tackle it again and it seems wiggling the wires closer to the motor itself has given me all the speeds back. I also found the air filter.....boy was it full of dirt and leaves! Replaced the filter from my dealer at the cost of 13.26 and all is working fine so far.

I had this issue in July of 2010.

2007 Tacoma. Had extended warranty. Around 70,000 miles at the time of the repair.

Air would only blow when the speed control was set to the high setting, and even then it would blow about as hard as if it was 1 up from Low. Would not blow at all on the other settings.

Dropped it off with the dealer August 13th of 2010. They gave me a loaner. Two weeks later they called to come get the truck to drive it till the backordered part (resistor) came in to fix the truck. I got in the truck and the entire climate control wire harness was removed. No air at all. This is in August. I complained, they gave me the loaner back till the truck was repaired.

I got the truck back October 7th.

Everything has been fine till this past weekend, when I noticed the air would only blow on the high setting again. Its been that way till today its working fine. I am off work today finally, and went to the dealer to let them have a look.

They claim no TSB exists on this, and their records show the first repair in 2010 was done on my extended warranty, not on the TSB. I am now over 100,000 miles (100,347 to be exact) and the extended warranty no longer applies. They told me if its the same as the first repaid I am responsible, and the first repair was over $7,400.

I am looking at trading the truck in.

 

Sounds like maybe trade in the dealer instead of the truck.

If that wire harness that plugs into the resistor is melted like the last one was (actually only 1 wire melted, but it melted from one end to the other, melting a few other wires with it, and required replacing the entire main wiring harness of the truck, a part that the dealership said was $3,200), I will trade the truck in before I pay to fix that.

I got my truck used 2 years ago, still paying on it. I can get a new Tundra or F150 with the same payments I am making on the Tacoma, 6% lower interest at the same time (9.4 on my tacoma, can get 2.9 on the tundra or F150) have more room (3 kids now, none when got the taco) and more towing ability. I been looking at new trucks anyway.

Mine started to only work on high about a year and a half ago. I opened up the fan, found a lot of dust from the brushes inside. I blew the motor out with compressed air squirted a dab of wd 40 on the bearing, buttoned it up and have had not problems for a year and a half. It was not the resistor, but build up from the brushes causing my problem at about 70k or so.

 

i had that issue too few weeks ago, and a friend of mine that works at local Toyota dealer told me the problem is on the a/c plugs, sometimes they get dirty and all you need to do is clean them ( you can use WD-40 or something like that)..and that's it guys...!!! the issue was resolved...(that's works on my 05 Tacoma ;-)

 

Mine was only working on high so I tuned the ignition on and the fan on low and i reached under the dash by the glove compartment and moved the wires around and it came on.

 

I have a 05 Tacoma and i changed the resistor twice,still had the problem and was told i may need to change the blower motor,i did and it worked fine for several months then stopped again,i read this thread about the burnt wire , so i puled it apart and filed the wire contact and then put the dielectric grease on it, so far it has worked fine for over a year. NOW if i can get back the money it cost me to replace the spiral cable ill be a happy camper with my $436 back.

 

Hi guys, and thanks for the help. Had the very same trouble with intermit. problems with the lower fan speeds, and (also) found a darker (overheated) terminal (second from the right) on the female side of the resistor connector. But I was able to remove that particular lug, from the four lug plastic holder. I took a .004 piece of steel shim stock (about 3/32" wide), and slid it in on the open end (opposite the wires) to release the tiny tab that holds that particular lug, in the plastic holder. If you look, there is a center slot in the plastic, that the tiny retainer tab goes into, to keep that particular lug from being pushed out when you put the four prong connector, on the resistor. If you slide the shim stock in and under the retainer tab, while carefully pulling on the wire connected to that lug (pushing the shim, while pulling the wire) the whole thing slides rite out the back. You can now reshape that lug (for a tighter fit) and reinstall it in the holder.

 

I just moved to a warmer part of the state and realized my blower only worked on High. Previously I rarely turned it to anything other than Low. Once everyone wakes up (mid-day naps) I will go out and check. If I have the burn mark I will replace with the 'updated' resistor and clean/grease the plug.

A quick look at the pictures posted and a Google search yielded the 'Updated' blower resistor for about 30$.

This fan speed problem is one I finally cured at about 150K on my '05. The resistor was not defective, it was the connector. I got some small spade connectors and eliminated the 4-wire connector. This was, however, only after replacing the fan motor twice! Another example of falling Tacoma quality.
