Larry, Are you suggesting that religion is the one source of moral standards and integrity? I think that is a myth taught through the church. Both ignorant and insulting. Plenty of "religious" VIP's with zero morals or integrity. Power corrupts.

Either I misunderstand or you seem to be using "judgement" in 2 conflicting ways.

First you fault atheists for not judging, wich is foreign to this atheist. I don't agree that anything goes, animal sex, rape, child molestation....... I judge that wrong. Polygamy? I'm with the mormons on that one! 13 year old not okay though.

Every other week a priest or minister is caught raping young boys and girls or having homosexual sex while scoring methamphetamines, hardly a high moral ground from religious leaders.

Then you say you and all christians you know don't cast judgement like it is a virtue for you unlike atheists?

I was christian until I reached the age of reason. When it came down to bible school and learning about evolution, I placed my faith with science. My entire family hates it, but then I'm an Engineer, and I base my entire career off fact and evidence. I'm incredibly skeptical about everything, I believe you don't need religion to have a good moral compass either.

Just my 2 pennies, I still respect whatever anyone chooses to believe in and won't debate it other then to only say that more people have died in the name of religion then any other cause of death.

Personally, I am very weary when saying I have "faith" in science. To me, science is something backed by independent imperical evidence, and the word faith implies belief without evidence (at least independent, verified, imperical evidence).

Don't get me wrong, I get what you are saying, just the wordage that rubs me... :D

I normally don't get involved in these threads, but I'll just leave this here. Not that I'm calling out Christianity - you can substitute any monotheistic religion by adding/removing appropriately to the columns. I just always liked this as food for thought.

    I'm not faulting anyone.

I simply made the point that atheists/secularists are pro non-judgement.

Of course there are peope of faith, including leadership who are unworthy of their own moral code...welcome to a world of sin.

I did not say "christians you know don't cast judgement like it is a virtue for you unlike atheists"...I said "personally...and everyone I know who is a Christian does not cast judgement upon others."

    well played

I'm still confused, you claim atheists/secularists are pro non-judgemental. Is that good or bad, like christians who don't cast judgement?

I'm an atheist that does judge.

this thread has to be the most posts I've made in a thread since becoming a member.

y'all are a lot of fun. [IMG]

one of many things I'd like to know:

That Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster...do they serve a good red wine at service? and is it fruity or tart? I do like a good red wine with my spaghetti, providing of course the sauce is marinara based...not a fan of alfredo sauces, but if I have to have it...I'd like a sweet white wine.

    but never a bubbly. :D

@drubacca117, just to clarify christianity does not teach that a child is evil as soon as they are born. In fact it states in the Bible that if a child dies they enter into heaven because they have no way of knowing right from wrong. This is shown in Deuteronomy 1:39 (NIV)
39 And the little ones that you said would be taken captive, your children who do not yet know good from bad—they will enter the land. I will give it to them and they will take possession of it.
The Bible also tells of an "age of accountability" in
    Isaiah 7:16 (NIV)
16 for before the boy knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right...
God doesn't consider infants to be evil or wicked in any way. It is those that are old enough to make the decision for themselves that are held accountable.

aaaah, a judgemental atheist. I knew a lady of that persuasion once...and she was not only a looker, she was hotter than a black cat on a tin roof in the Alabama sun. A lot of fun too :D

as far as judgement is concerned...I judge no one. not saying I never have, but it never provided the results I was seeking. So I learned not to do so.

the "judgement" I speak of is within your own heart...not of others. I'll leave that for the deity.

Then by those excerpts a child can't be born a sinner. Born in to a world of sin yes, born a sinner no... Then there are the differing denominations of Christianity that squabble on the matter... some saying that the children go to purgatory, others saying that a baptised child will enter heaven while the un-baptised will suffer...
