So I went to the dentist for the first time in a few years. They said a cavity got so big that it got to the root and infected the tooth next to it, so I need a filing, a crown, and a root canal, and I've never had a root canal.

I was very surprised that I even had a cavity, let alone needing a root canal. I brush my teeth 3 times a day, floss twice a day, rinse with a fluoride wash, I wear my retainers every night. wtf...

I had a root canal done, but I don't think my experience is typical. The root was actually dead, and causing an abscess..so there was very little discomfort.

I had the exact same problem years ago. Actually went through basic training with it and experienced some pretty harsh pain. The "chronic abscess" I had was pretty painful. Luckily the pain only lasted about a week or so. I dealt with the pain by chewing on my canteen ha ha. Anyway, when I went and had the root canal done I had zero pain during the process. I forget, but I think all they did was the the numbing shot and took care of any possible pain. I think either way you will be good to go.

You will be fine. I had 3 surges in my mouth. One time they pulled out 4 teeth, including my wisdom teeth and the wisdom teeth were not even visible. They also cut the roof of my mouth because there was a tooth stuck up there.

When I woke up all I tasted was blood and gauze. lol

Worst part is the local but they will probably use a lidocaine and marcaine mix that doesnt really hurt either.

Its not bad man. With local numbing and a prescription of Ibuprofen or in some case's Vicodin, you should be able to manage the pain. It'll only be sore for a day or so...

I have to have a root canal done on Monday! ;(

Should be OK. If you have dental phobia, I have a new company CyberPsyc that will be releasing dental anxiety software later this summer.

I had a root canal done. The actual procedure didn't hurt at all, since it was numbed. They gave me a prescription for pain reliever for after the local wore off, but I never filled the scrip, since I didn't have any real pain.

After all I had heard about root canals, I thought it would be painful, but in reality, it was a piece of cake.

Now if you need your wisdom teeth out, I'd say that would be more likely to be painful then the root canal. I'm probably going to have mine out this year, I got a new job, and hopefully better benefits that will help with the cost.

Worst part for me was all the time sitting in the chair while the dentist insisted on explaining every step...and that first injection of anesthetic w/ the horse needle.

I had a root canal done without any numbing medication. It took them longer to agree to do it without medication then the procedure actually took. After he got the approval I really think he tried to do his best to make it as painful as possible, but I wasn't phased. That was while I was in the military.

It shouldn't hurt. If it helps, I had my done by a military densist (read: usually not good) and the only reason I was uncomfortable was because it was the tooth in the very back and they had to pry my mouth open to get at it.

I just got back from the dentist and they told me I need two root canals w/ crowns, and a couple fillings and some sealer on a few teeth. Grand total after my insurance pays their part is $6,000 out of my pocket. Does that even seem logical for it to cost that much?

If price is a factor , go see a root canal specialist . They are very efficient and thousands cheaper than your average tooth doctor .
Shoulda been a dentist . Legal way of stealing from the white collar dudes .
Tell them your paying cash and the fee goes way down . If paying through insurance , they skyrocket the fee .
Sorry but over the years , dentists have left a bad taste in my mouth .

I want to say my canal and crown was about $1500 after insurance? It was outrageous. If I did it over again I'd get done in Mexico. There are several border towns that cater to healthcare with very clean facilities and English-speaking staff. Payment is in cash, no insurance.

Don't go the root canal route! Why? Roots can grow back. And the expensive crown work that has to be done to fill the root canal route will have to be removed and replaced again and also crowns themselves can fail! Its cheaper and much more permanent to have the tooth pulled and dental implants installed. How do I know this? Experience!
