This is what sucks about lottery in the us.. If you want the payout, it's less, and then you get taxed on it. 550mill would probably turn into 150m all said and done.
In Canada, you get all of it. You win $50m, you get $50m.

yup, one of my coworker won 1mil last year on a lotto raffle and ended up bringing 540k home after all taxes. still from a 10dollar ticket to 540k i'd take it and be super happy

Thats right there describes the job of a actuary.

Basically pull a number out of your ass, say its an educated guess, and then apply it as fact.

You get less because they don't actually have $540,000,000 to pay out. Perhaps in Canada they only actually show you the actual cash value they have so it seems like you're getting it all. That's why anytime they have these drawings it will always say what the actual cash value is. Right now they actually have $389,000,000 to pay if you take the cash option. Minus Uncle Sams initial cut of 25% and you'd be left with $292,500,000. Even if you opt for the annuity you're only ending up with around $404,000,000 after your payments end, assuming they don't start lowering your payments which sometimes happens.

I mean it would be even more of a frenzy if there were no taxes and they actually had that much money and someone would be really walking away with half a billion dollars.

I have heard that some companies tell their employees that they are not allowed to do office pools (not that they can legally prevent them from doing it, but they tried). They figure if the pool wins and every employee retires the whole business is gone.
Makes me wonder why the bosses don't just join the pool...

I got that, but that doesn't change the actual cash value part. Even if there was no lottery tax in the US you still wouldn't be walking home with 500 mil.

Not that it matters since I have a better chance of getting struck by lightning 3 times in one day while dating a super model while using an opposite handed instrument near a nuclear power plant lol.

Compounding interest, and future values would show you you're still better off to take lump payment. Don't feel like calculating it but its a big reason you get "more" by taking an annuity, in real numbers you would end up with more by taking the lump payment.

Edit - Missed the point of the discussion, rendering this post useless but ill leave it here for when a member wins and needs to decide what to take.

haha yea. I'd take the lump sum no doubt. Hell could just invest a few million in some stocks that pay some nice dividends and just live off the dividend payments and not ever touch the rest of the 280+ million.

Our company pool usually gets like 100 or so tickets. 33 people in it. I have like 20 of my own tickets as well. Probably just as constructive to flush my money down the toilet but hey, someone has to win.
