    Find some dirt!
Town halls have free maps that show all roads, including, unmaintained and seasonally maintained.
Also, national and state forest lands have some dirt roads too.

To me off roading does not mean getting stuck or breaking anything!

    I am from near Albany.

I'm in one of those small towns too. Chances are, if you travel between Binghamton and Ithaca you've driven past my house too! Assuming you go up 38.

I know a *few* places around here, and a few up in the Marathon/Cortland area. Nothing too extreme. Mostly logging roads or seasonal use roads. However, some of them can get a little tricky during winter, or if they get washed out/flooded.

I won't be doing too much soon though. I hit a deer on Monday and will be waiting a month for my plate steel bumper to replace the plastic crap on the front.

I have a barn I work in, welder, grinder, and a few air tools.

Going to go with Brute Force Fab. http://bruteforcefab.com/FRONT_BUMPERS.php

He was the first of only 2 fabricators to get back to me with a turn around time, and just wants $400 up front. So it'll be easier on my wallet!

Also, with it primed flat black I can shoot it with some spray-on bedliner myself, or pay someone to do it. Should last longer than PC I think, and cuts down the cost from him. And I won't have to prep raw steel like non-PC options from others.

Say, you wouldn't happen to be registered on NYShooters.net would you?

Sorry man, but not me. Never even heard of it. I do live in NY and I do like shooting!:D Though ammo is getting expensive and extended clips seem to be frowned upon in our state. This place brings the suck when it comes to taxes and gun laws. I'm sure you're already aware of that though.:D

Yeah, I'm running into that each time I see a cool gun we want. :frusty: And whenever I look into getting CCW's for the wife and I. Seems lots of illegal stuff can be had if it's pre-ban, but it's still a grey area in the law.

We've actually considered selling the house and moving just over the border into PA due to all the BS laws (not just gun related ones). It's not financially feasible now, so we won't. But that doesn't mean we haven't seriously thought about it. lol

I've always wondered about pre-ban ones. Like how does a cop know they're pre-ban (and legal) if he pulls you over and sees them? They're supposed to be legal, but I don't want to find out the hard way what the cop thinks.

My understanding is that they can take them with the assumption of them being illegal and that you may have to prove it is pre-ban to the judge. Kinda backwards to how it's supposed to be...isn't it? BTW, I may be wrong here, but who in their right mind would argue with law-enforcement on the side of the road?

Exactly! I thought about getting some now, and working on an AR build. Never using them, but keeping them loaded and locked away for when SHTF. At that point, cops are probably the least of my concerns. Unless they're zombie cops of course. Those bullet proof vests are harder to shoot through! :D

That may be it. I know I saw some East German AK (i think) mags in a store with no markings. Assumed pre-ban since East Germany hasn't existed for quit some time now. However, it seems I saw some pre-bans for sale with a date stamp.... :notsure:

Jon, I believe the head shot to be the most practical when it comes to zombies. I think destruction of the brain is the most efficient way to go. Though if there are only one or two nearby, it may be fun to just take them limb by limb. Once they are propelling themselves with stumps, the head shot can take place. One must keep in mind conservation of ammunition also!:) You never know how much or when it will be needed.

A Vietnam vet friend of mine told me if I didn't have 10,000 rounds hidden around, I don't have enough. Mags and ammo are now my main concern. Then maybe a backup AR!:notsure:

lol Yeah, definitely head shots! We need more range time to do that though.

My buddy has around 150,000 rounds stock piled and has jars of shot he's made himself. We're going to have him reload for us, and teach us how at some point. Meanwhile, I'm keeping an eye on ammo prices for sale/promotions to start adding to our cache.

We have a shotgun and couple .22's for now. Soon will add a coach gun for the wife, then I can start my AR build.

I know right? He's single, no kids, lives in the middle of nowhere so he can shoot out the back door and blow shit up. So he has time on his hands fr shit like that.

He works for a metal fabricator so he has the knowledge to do it too, and has a mini CNC mill in his basement. He scavenges materials whenever he can. Including lead plugs from old pipes, old pipes, wheel weights, etc to melt down outside in a piece of C channel with one of those ice melting propane torches. Pours them into ingots to use in a melting pot to pour into shot molds he made himself.

We've been sharing info on solar and wind energy, alternative gardening ideas, food storage, and other things for about a year now. His other friends have kind of dropped off with drama issues so we've been talking to him more, and making plans to hang out more for fun and "classes." :D

    Edit:
Oh, and whenever I hear someone on "Doomsday Preppers" say "I have 10's of thousands of rounds of ammo" I laugh. :D
