Gear ratio change

I have a 1998 Tacoma prerunner 3.4L with a 3 inch suspension lift on it and I was thinking of changing my rear end gear ratio from 4.10's to 3.73's or something that would get me better mpg's because all I tow is my ATV. What ratio do you guys think would still have decent power but also offer better mpg's?

 

Gearing up is not going to get you any better MPG's it will most likely make it worse.

 

35's and 4.56 I get 24 mpg so Id say I am doing pretty well

Chris, the OP wants to go from 4.10 to 3.73 so he is not looking to recover power, he wants to loose more power (powerband shift not actual mechanical power loss)

 

No doubt, if someone made 4.10s for 2nd Gens I could get relatively close to stock MPGs. He's talking about going from 4.10 to 3.73 with larger tires which doesn't make much sense (to me anyways)

Re-gearing correctly would mean gearing down to 4:56 (or something close) would it not?

 

Totally forgot about that I've assumed it get better mileage then my 4:56 (as it would be closer to stock) but was never really are, time to do some searching

 

Crap, I totally got that backwards then. I figured if I geared up then the motor wouldn't work as hard on the interstate. So I'm gonna stick with 31's and what would be the best ratio for those tires and offer the best mileage from my truck?

 

I was wondering what 4.56's would do for me? I kinda like the idea of having more low end torque

 

It'll kill you're Hwy mileage because you'll be really high in the Rpm range, that is if tou're running 31's

 

That's what I was thinking it would it do. Would it help city mileage any? It would a plus just having the extra torque from the 4.56's even if they hurt city mileage by a little bit
