Anyone Running 255/85/16???

I am looking at getting some bfg mud terrains in 255/85/16 anyone have any pics of these on???

You need about 2.5" of lift to clear them.

 

Really now? the lift will do nothing about rubbing. Even with the lift you need to pound in your pinch weld because full stuff is the same as stock... Frame rubbing all depends on your wheel offset and will not be affected by lift either. 2.5-3" lifts don't do anything but utilize stock IFS travel to put you higher in the air.

 

Tires look great, might have to do these instead of 285/75/16s...

 

255/85/16s look amazing on 1st gens. I opted for the 285/75/16s because I have a 2nd gen...the 255 tires are to skinny for a wider truck IMO

Ya I had 285s on my 2nd gen too, looked perfect. Think the 255s would be fine on the 1st, agreed.

 

What he said. The suspension still travels through the same space regardless of lift (aside from DB or SAC of course).

 

I understand what your saying but he asked about "clearing them" to me meaning "how much lift do I need?"

He didn't ask about rubbing though and yes a lift does help rubbing. 255s would rub like crazy with no lift that is if you could even drive at all lol. He does need about 2.5 to clear them cuz they will not work with a stock truck. He may still need to do the pinch weld mod but not everyone does it depends on the lift you have. Its also gonna be different for him cuz he 's got a 2nd gen IMO.

 

Ive been looking for a thread like this... My truck guy keeps telling me to go with a
255/75/17 Trail Grappler and Im just worried that they wont look rite.

 

A lift only "helps rubbing" by putting the tire further away from the rub point at rest. The tire can still travel up to the same exact spot lift or not. It takes the same amount of trimming to make them not rub at all regardless of lift. So if you do the trimming you can fit 255s at stock height. You will also need wheels with the proper backspacing or wheel adapters to not rub on the frame at full lock.

 

He has a 03 from what the little thingy under his name says. soo...1st gen, like both our rigs. Only reason some people don't do the pinch weld is because with a lift the spring rate is usually higher meaning you need more force to stuff that tire COMPLETELY and unless you do some harder wheeling people don't end up realizing that the tire rubs. Or if you have a drop bracket and a 33 tire, then you won't need to fuck with the pinch.

You saying they will rub more without a lift I understand, because it is easier for the tire to be stuffed, there is only 4 inches it needs to travel upwards instead of 6.5 if you were to suspension lift the front 2.5 inches.

 

Went wheeling today and the 255's rubbed A LOT on the back. No way in hell these will fit stock(unless you tub both front/rear fender well AND cut some sheet metal)
