Question for pilots?

On Commercial jets, what is that white haze/smoke coming from the ceiling of the flight deck waiting to depart from the gate? Pressurization?

 

Hey man, I'm a C130 Pilot in the Air Force. It's not pressurization. On the ground, we aren't pressurized. Depending on what kind of pressurization schedule they're working, you might not actually begin to actually pressurize until passing 4 or 5 thousand feet. It's probably just condensation from air conditioning. It's pretty common. The AC is usually routed through the ceilings on planes versus the floor because cold air sinks. (just like in your house) I saw it a lot in the desert (of course) and I agree, it looks kind of eerie. Whenever the Army guys would pile into the back of the plane, they'd all stare at it too. Hope this quells your curiosity!

 

It's kind of weird because its like two streams going in different diagonal directions, downwards. The streams are maybe 6 inches wide at the base, 2 inches at the top, and 2 feet long streams. It looks like smoke from a e-cig...I noticed it when i sat in my seat maybe 2 minutes after we boarded the plane, and maybe 10 minutes before actuall taxi. I should have asked the damn pilot .

Flying the Herk has been pretty cool. I'm making the change from the C130H (old plane) to the C130J (new hottness). Take a look at the pics:


This is what I used the fly. This is the H model and it still has some components with 1950's technology in it.


This is what I'm flying now. This is the J model and it's an all "glass" (computer screen) cockpit, it's bigger, faster, has better fuel economy, and is a LOT smarter than the H. The J also has a crew that's smaller than the H. In the H we had 2 pilots, 1 Navigator, 1 Engineer, and 2 Loadmasters. Now in the J, it's just 2 pilots and 2 loadmasters.


The four-bladed props behind me is the H model. The six-bladed props way in the background is the J.

How could I NOT love flying the Herk? I get paid to fly 300' off the ground, tactically in formation, in bad-guy areas, land on dirt, drop off hummers and light armor, food, bullets, and paratroopers to help the war effort that's going on wth the ground pounders. Are you a Marine?

so the new avionics and cockpit includes a full HUD w/ pitch ladder/etc..

airborne radar as well (for cargo variants), ..assuming weather, not fire-control-radar..?

 

My dad was a chief mech. on the herc when she came out(dover base at the time). They handed her over to him she only had 6 hours from lockheed.

Its good the to the BEST airframe in the world great the upgrade to the j models. I hope they dont crap those h's

 

That's right. No fire control because this is a "slick" 130. Some of the MC and AC 130's have other goodies because they're offensive. I'll have to see if I can post some pics/vids of some airdrops. Can we post videos on here somehow?

 

It's the air being vented out of the cockpit where the pilots are toking up.
