Wheel and tire help

Hey guy's still new here to the forum and just got my Tacoma. I searched through various post for sizes but some are hard to know if the truck has a lift or not. I have been out of the aftermarket wheel crowd for awhile but would like to get some opinions and get rid of the stock steel wheels.

I am looking at the Moto Metal 951 wheels in either 16x8 or 17x9. I plan on getting the BFG Rugged Terrains to go with these wheels.

What size would work with these size wheels with the truck at stock and still be able to keep the mudflaps with no rubbing?

My other question is the truck is Nautical Blue, would some black with chrome wheels look good on the blue or would all chrome look better? Had a hard time finding black wheel pics on the blue Tacomas.

Not sure on the 17's but I'm running the 16's with the stock 16 size tires of 265/70/16. I was told I could run 75's but got mixed opinions. Some said they would scrub, some said they would not. Some said they would work with a little trimming, or removing the flaps. I went with the 70's partially for not trimming or removing the flaps and partially to keep the mpg's as close to stock as possible. I got a really good deal on the 16's is the main reason I went with them. Now that I've had them for a few months I wish I had stayed with the 17's. I'm not that happy with the look of the 16's. But I think I'll be much happier with the look if I can get it leveled out. And In case you're wondering, so far my mpg's seem to be holding the same. Based on my searches, my wheel/tire combo only weighed 3lbs more than stock.

 

Thanks for the info, I like the way your truck looks with those. Im afraid of the same, wishing I got the 17 later on. I'm leaning more towards the chrome 17's but really don't want any rubbing issues or have to remove the front mudflaps. It looks like a 265/65/17 would be the closest to stock diameter but since the wheel is a 9" wheel I'm not sure how it will affect the clearance.

 

That is why I wasn't sure on the 17's. I know there are many running these in the 17's on here, just can't remember if they're lifted or what. However there are 17x8's in other wheels out there as far as I can remember. If you're not set on these that is.

I think the 951s would look perfect on your truck! I used to run 265/75/16s when I had no lift and had no rubbing issues at all...some folks do on the other hand....its weird. The 265/75/16s look much better in my opinion. I'm also a big fan of less wheel and more tire, thats why I say 16"

Also the Rugged Terrains are not good tires by any means...nor are the rugged trails. May I suggest the BFG A/Ts?

I can't help you with the size OP, but I just want to let you know about the Rugged Terrains if you have never seen them. I don't know if they look different for the sizes, but if they don't I suggest you see those in person before you get them. They look pretty good in pics I have seen, but my dad has a set of those on his Chevy, and they are kind of weird looking on his truck. They almost Balloon out on the sides. Just an FYI for you and some friendly advice.

 

Was that on stock or aftermarket wheels? I've wondered if maybe the ones running the 75's and didn't scrub were on the stock wheels being a little more narrow and not sitting out as far kept them from scrubbing?

 

I have 265/75/16 Toyo AT's (stock rims) on my truck with no rubbing before or after my lift. I have a set of 17x8 rims ready to go on my truck as soon as my new 265/70/17 Hankooks show up. Both of those sizes have the same overall diameter and width. If I could have gotten the rim I wanted in a 16 I would have went with that but they were unavailable. The 16 inch tires are cheaper, come in a wider variety of load ranges, and have more sidewall for a softer ride and better flex off road. As far as black rims or chrome I say chrome all the way. I am a little old school (and old) on this but I think black rims on anything look like ass!

 

Thanks again for the help guy's. I have decided to go with the chrome 16x8 with 265/70/16 BFG A/T's might as well get the tires I really want instead of the Rugged terrains.

Wheels and tires were much easier back when I had the 86" Xtra Cab 4x4 15x10's with 31X50.15 no lift and no issues.

Some tire companies run a little larger in tire sizes. BFG, Goodyear and Nitto and just a few. All tire companies have a gray area that the tire has to be within to be a certain size

 

I'd often wondered about this. Just for kicks, when I got my wheels/tires I measured the height of the stock 265/65/17's and compared to the new ones. According to the tire calculator they were supposed to be very close to the same as I expected since both are stock sizes for these trucks. Also measured the ride height of my fenders. Turns out the new tires were actually about an inch taller and gave me about a half inch more height.

Just checked the calculator again and the new 16's were only supposed to be .05 taller.
