Movie pc to tv

We have a couple of movies on a western digital portable ext HD. What is the procedure to watch them on my Sony BrAVIA. Thanks

There's no "EASY" way of doing it. The most simplistic way of doing it would be hooking up a laptop to the TV, plugging in the external drive to the laptop, and basically turning the TV into a second monitor.

I'm guessing that you're not exactly "tech savvy" if you're asking this.

 

All depends on what you call tech savvy. thats what this forum is for isn't it?

 

If your Bravia doesn't support it directly, then you need to have a device connected to your TV that is capable of playing media off a external drive.
For example:
- Your computer/laptop
- Network enabled blu-ray player, PlayStation 3, etc.

Sony has a number of Bluray players that will do this, as well as LG, Samsung. Plug in your drive, and away you go.
Some even have built-in WiFi, others you have to buy a USB WiFi dongle. But they all have an ethernet jack on the back if you have wired connectivity near your TV.
The network connectivity would allow you to play content off your PC over your network - so you wouldn't have to move the external drive around.. leave it on the PC. All that is required is free software on your PC to serve the media - like the newer Windows Media Player, or 'PS3 Media Server' (what I use), etc.
If you deal with HD content, you'd best use wired connectivity, or at least a good strong wireless signal.

 

Get yourself a HTPC, doesn't have to be much, dual core, 4gb of ram, and a video card that supports 1080

 

External hard drive hooked up to laptop - HDMI to tv ?

 

Connect the Laptop to the Television. Boom-bada-bam.

I just hook it and a 3mm cable to my tv...sound plays through tv speakers and move plays on tv.

 

this is where it comes in handy to have an old/backup PC laying around

edit: BTW, just thought i'd mention, ...unless you've got one of the newer vid adapters w/ HDMI port, ...it might be a PITA to find a way to get the TV to recognize video only over an HDMI input, plus analog audio over RCA input simultaneously.. some DVI ported vid adapters "may" even allow you to run video and audio over DVI-I to HDMI (use an little adapter), ..."some", but not all... but mainly i blame the tv manufacturers who have gone almost all-HDMI now, w/ little thought to people who want to use it as a computer monitor, which means the will likely be connecting via VGA or DVI, plus an analog stereo sound... stupid HDMI,

I found out last night that the wifes laptop has a hdmi connector, plugged that into my sony and we watched the movie (which wasn't really worth the trouble).thanks.
