Three winning tickets were sold, one in Maryland, one in Illinois and one on Kansas. If all the winners claim their prizes and take lump sums they will get $105 million after taxes -- not chump change by any means but not $656 million dollars either. I read too that over a billion tickets were sold in this game alone, so if you bought a ticket and didn't win you can be comforted in the fact that you are in the company of millions of other idiots who played and lost.

I saw on the news the expected cash value of a ticket (how much you could expect to win on average for your $1 ticket) was about $3 due to the number of people playing. So the average ticket paid $3. Statistically you could actually expect to make money on this lottery. That's pretty unusual of course, and it's an average so your 3 winners with a total of $640,000,000 are averaged in with all the people who won nothing. But I thought that was pretty cool, doesn't happen often. First time I've ever heard of the statistics of the lottery working in your favor if you bought a ticket.
