Changing differential fluid - A step by step "HOW TO"

dont the shops charge like 80 90 bucks to do this for you?

 

i have 19000 on the pickup and i put a lot of jet skis in the water minds as well get this done. anyone know the best place for Toyota additive and rear end oil?

 

regular 75-90w oil from checkers or the dealership.

I used 80-90 weight because what the store had in-stock.

4oz. of LSD additive again from the dealer or local auto parts store since you have a Sport model.

No, you only need it if you have a limited slip differential....

 

Just went to our local toyota dealer to get the LS additive and all they had was Motorcraft. The parts guy stated toyota corp. sent out a letter of approved additives other than toyota stuff, due to the toyota brand costing so much. Anyone else heard of this?????

 

Same here, Toyota does not have additive for LSD nor has Gear oil for sale. Oil used in the barrels does come with LSD additive in it and it is the same stuff as Ford and GM uses. I replaced my rear diff fluid after 17k miles and it was burned like hell.
I changed with Valvoline Synth 75W-140 in hope that I will avoid chatter in differential.
That of course did not work well. I have chatter when diff is cold. (under 100F) few minutes highway driving will heat up and chatter will go away.
I am planning to add Amsoil LSD additive to see if I can get rid of chatter on cold.

So looking at the thread I dont see anybody having sucess with Synthetic oils.

I am going to use Valvoline Durablend 80-90 in a couple of thousands miles w/the additive. I'll post any negitive results.

update 7 Sept - No chatter at all.

Lucas Oil 80w90 with this additive from autozone = no chatter

 

Anyone know if Amsoil Severe Gear 75-90 and the additional additive from amsoil still causes the chatters in the LSD? That's my plan after some research, and trusting amsoil in the past.

I had been lurking around here for some time but usually stayed on Pirate/TTORA/IH8MUD . Its just now I am little emotional with that LSD.
I wish I had known how Toyota LSD works, I would not have bought truck with one. I got DBL cab + Long Bad and LSD is standard on that (don't know why )
I will either get that LSD to work with Synthetic or Get my myself Truetrac.
I should have listen to Australian crowd that had the same issues with LSD's in some of their cruisers.(apparently the same type)

Once i get my Amsoil additive added I am going to know if going Valvoline 75-140 + Amsoil + additive works.
Amsoil stuff are on order so I should know by this weekend. I will report back. So if anybody wants to wait, we will test on my stuff.

 

Ok so this is looking actually very good.
Here is what I did (This is info for rear diff with Mechanical LSD - 2005-2008 TRD Sport or Dbl cab + Long Bed)

Oil = Valvoline Synthetic 75W-140
Additive = AMSOIL SlipLock
I went on the nice grassy field and runned about 20 circles (10 one way 10 other way) After that my chatter had went away.
So far my LSD seem to actually work much smoother then when it came from factory.
To the point that I was afraid its not working at all. But little wheel spin confirmed that it does work its just smooth.
Lets keep fingers crossed on this one.

 

The service dept at the dealer(the computer showed) 120,000 miles is when it is due to be changed.

Dealer charges $79.

Do It Yourself $27. For 3 qts of diff fluid. Not sure of price of the LSD additive. Not needed in my 05.
